............. Do people pick up good quality bikes for about a £1000? I'm looking at chopping in the Hyosung 125 for a 500/600 commuter bike.
Tried biketrader and MCN and everything for £1000 mark is smashed to pieces or older than me (25).

You see on this forum people with nice quality GPZ 500's or Fazers etc for about £500 and they look nice.

Seen a Yamaha XJ600 N diversion or whatver their called for £850 and then its just CBR 600's from 1989 with 6 million miles on and crash damaged.

I think it is a hang over from the 'credit crunch' Less people where buying new bikes, therefore more people buying used which means less bikes and more demand, = more cash.

I remember a while back you could get a decent ish condition hornet for £1000, they are far more expensive now.

Got my SV650 2 years ago, mint condition, 15k miles and had just had new chain and sprockets fitted for £1000. So you can pick up well maintained, nice bikes for that kind of budget.

Bike trader is where people usually over value their bikes. They can sometimes be knocked down, but i tend to find it too much effort. Local paper & ebay are pretty good places to check.

Just refined the ebay search and found a few. Granted, I have not looked through them thoroughly but they are all rock steady bikes IMO. By rock steady I mean popular bikes that have stood the test of time.

My 1998 GPZ was bought for less than £500, my NTV600 was £300, My TDR250 was £250 and my TS50 was £200.

All of my bikes so far have been great for the money with the exception of my ZZR600 which had lots of hidden gremlins, but that got written off non-fault, oh shame!

I bought a 1990 ZZR1100 for £900 on ebay. I phoned him up and offered £900 for him to end the auction early and he said he was only looking for £800. I was gobsmacked. The bike was georgeous so I forced the £900 on him Embarassed

https://img709.imageshack.us/img709/1691/zzr1100.jpg

It had done 26000 miles.

Bad start - places that ask for around 5% of your expected buying price upfront aren't going to be that popular for your price range.

Surely you could get that, new battery and fork seals for less than £1k?

Not sure you have quite got the hang of negotiating a sale. Maybe get someone else to do that bit another time.
