hello, im new to this forum, and the biking world in general. I am a keen 'car'ist but have just been given a 2009 Kinlon 125CC bike. I dont have any experience with bikes, but i have rebuilt several classic cars, so i'm not new to getting my hands dirty...cut..oily....bloody... Laughing

The bike has only done 209 miles, and has been left outside for the last 12months covered up. A quick look over revealed some of the trim was cracked, indicator broken, battery dead (replaced with a bosch), and the chain is very rusty. The wheels turn freely, the clutch works, brakes are unsized, throttle cable is sticky, gears select ok, em thats about it.

I am wanting to get it going, and just wondered what would be the best plan of attack.

cheers Smile

Scrap it an buy a Japanese bike would be your best bet, it will save you money in the long run. Laughing

First things first, clean out the carb and the petrol tank fresh fuel fresh plug and then try starting it.

Yeah, what Chris said. New plug, check spark. Fresh fuel and clean carb. Engine turns freely.

Those 3 things ticked and you should be close, if not fully running.

made a fair bit of progress today. swapped the battery, fixed the cowling, replaced the indicator, cleaned and lubed the chain, replaced some of the bulbs. I have turned her over, but she is just not firing. Checked the tap and outlet, fuel pours out. also checked for a spark, and getting a really strong spark (ht lead to body). She turns over really well, but not even a cough. I havent inspected the spark plug (can find my spark plug socket... Rolling Eyes ) I would love it to be that simple, but could a spark plug fail after only 200 miles, plus free standing for a year? never had a plug fail on me before?

It could be just that simple , get it out & test it , might just need cleaning or a new plug for about £3.50 Neutral

No..... its still a heap o'crud Chinky bike!

And you were STILL ripped off! Scrap man would have CHARGED the bloke to take it off his hands!

Honestly, they chuck those things through the metal sorter and whats supposedly 'steel' ends up in the non ferouse bin, theres so little iron in it! Its the one thing that saves them from completely rusting to pieces.... theres not ACTUALLY enough proper metal to let them go THAT rusty!

Few years ago, bloke I know got one. Old Brit Bike classic enthusiast. Riding, a few miles a year to and from a show, got a tug and transpired when sending his licence to DVLA to change his address, they had 'lost' his bike entitlement, so was 'let off' provided he got a full licence within three months.

Bought a Jailing, I think, becouse they were cheap, to do training and test, thinking it would be a bit of fun. Was appauled by the loose nuts and bolts, general fit and finish, even by standards of old leaky brit iron.

But he knew a thing or two about ill built bikes, so after getting his CBT out the way and frowning at the oil consumption, took it to bits and ded what he'd do on an old brit bike.... like get the engine cases on a sheet of glass with lapping paste and get them flat and 'matched' so they sealed.

Only he reckoned he had to start with a file, and then having got them flat, discovered they didn't actually line up, so he put them in a vice, got them hot with an oxy torch, and twisted them to better shape.... let them cool, built up some edges with lumiweld, then filed to flat and lapped on glass... before putting it all back together again with good gaskets..... thinking that there was NO WAY the bike could leak oil.......

It did..... it was soaking through the metal!

In utter frustration he actually took the engine out the frame, and after stubbing his toe on it, launched it through his garage window at the Railway embankment at the bottom of his garden.....

It landed in his wifes vegetable plot...... where it remains as a garden orniment!

By all means, feel free to have a play with this little bike, but I would seriousely caution spending too much time or effort on it.....

Sort ONE thing, out an in all liklihood that will merely just highlight the NEXT major prolem!

Yes, there are bad 'uns, but you might get lucky. I would agree that you shouldn't don't spend a penny more than you have to on it; you'll never see the money back.

If it was abandoned from new, it's likely got something like a Torch AT7 plug in it. Bin that, get an NGK D8EA or DR8EIX in there - I'm assuming that it's got a 156 or 157FMI engine. It'll be marked on it somewhere.

so far i have only bought some chain cleaner and wax, and a new spark plug. I removed the carb and cleaned it up, plus checked the needle valve and jet. Reattached it, cranked it for a good bit, and she fired up Cool

I agree about the build quality, not the best in the world, but then again i own two cars produced by British Leyland, so i'm used to it!

Just need to clean her up a bit, service it, then it will be on the road Very Happy
