Needs no explanation, but watched it tonight and a lot of the particular footage I hadn't seen before.

Needless to say it makes difficult viewing, and large portions have no soundtrack, but for 52 minutes of your life it isn't a lot to ask. A life that was denied to so many.

Thought it was important to pass on the link. Take it or leave it.

I started working in the 60's. Most of the blokes were WW2 veterans. It was quite unusual for any of them to talk about "what they did in the war", usually just snippets of info here and there.
One day the subject of the camps came up, it turned out the bloke I was apprenticed to at the time, had been part of a group that liberated one of the camps.
He told me a little about the experience.
It was the first time I saw a grown man cry.

The old European tradition of the British invent something, and the Germans perfect it, and do it more efficiently on a bigger scale.

One of the slogans on the entrance gate, is quite famous and a blatant lie. "Arbeit macht Frei" -"work will make you free".

Another one that I hadnt seen before "Jedem das Seine", means to each his own, or more ominously "you get what you deserve."

We took the birkenau/auschwitz tour in poland a couple of years ago. Very morbid as you would expect but a true eye opener. Ive since read a few books from survivors and it was quite surreal to hear the places described that I'd been to and seen with my own eyes.

We were all a bit unaware of exactly how bad the places were. I think we had had made an ignorant assumption that the prisoners would turn up on cattle trucks and then be executed, we had no idea of the torture and inhumane barbarism that actually went on. The starvation cells, the standing cells, the roll calls, the medical experiments. Reading the books and learning of the commanders playing games with the prisoners that eventually led to the deaths of all involved. Walking the hallways of the barracks at the first camp was quite chilling, they are lined with the photos they took of the prisoners on the way into the camp, they just went on and on.

Then theres the other side of it where the human spirit had shone through amongst the prisoners. The will to live of some was in complete defiance of the numbing inevitability they faced on a daily basis.

Standing in the famous guard tower and getting a full scale view of Auschwitz 2 will be one of those things that will stay with me for a while. The clinical purpose built gas chambers there had been demolished before liberation so there was none of the shower rooms that you see in the films and documentarys.

Quite as disturbing thing to watch.

Not sure what goes through someone's head to produce such a emotionless systematic way of killing millions of people.

One thing thats important to remember is that it wasn't all systematic killing. Some of the means used make the gas chamber seem humane.

From a justification point of view its far devoid from the modern 'push a button, drop a bomb, read the results'. Aot of thos was face to face killing. Also while I agree people had justified these things because of what they were told by their government its clear that some of these monsters enjoyed what they did, whilst others had genuine hatred for the Jews.
