I have been painting the house recently and now it is time to paint the skirting boards, and wood around the doors and windows.
When looking at paint to buy the other day I noticed that it is a different type of paint you need to paint on top of wood.
However, the previous owner of the house has aready painted these area... so; technically I am painting on top of PAINT and not on top of wood ?
So will it be ok to buy the cheaper 'normal' paint or do I need to buy the more expensive wood paint ?

Sand it down ... lol .. i paid me mate to do mine, took days and 2 large tins of nitromours, a belt and mouse sander and umpteen sheets, aswell as plenty of scrapping, if your not going to be there long term or if it is not your place, then don't bother, and if you do bother you need doors and flooring that go with the end result.

It depends just how far you want to go? My place has not got a drop of gloss paint in it any where. What I have done over the year's. Is rip the skirting board off the wall and binned it. Then plaster the wall down to the floor. Dam plasters usually miss the last inch or so. The with new wood. Drill the wooden skirting board and plug the wall and fix the wood to the wall with screw's. Slip a piece of wood under the board to give you a gap the slip the carpet under.
Instead of painting it use a light stain. paint sit's on top off wood so you can alway's chip the paint. And another covering of paint will not cover any chippings. Stain on the other hand penetrates the wood so can't be chipped. To re fresh. is easy. Just un screw a few screw's. Take out side re stain. wait until it dry's. And re screw back. Job done.

IIRC there should be a gap between the plaster and the ground floor. It stops any moisture getting drawn across the damp proof course and then sucked up by the plaster. ____________________ Diabolical homemade music Bandcamp and Soundcloud

Run some medium sandpaper over the current gloss to give a key, then use a non liquid gloss. You can use masking tape if you like, or you can just take your time and be careful. I prefer the latter. It's dead easy and you get an awesome sense of satisfaction, achievement and well being once you've done it all. Decorating rocks.
