The cat was probably getting too close to the birds nest for comfort, sadly it completely backfired and the chicks will die anyway, now mommy is dead.

Was obvious that cat was being singled out by a catist bird. The cat was walking away minding its own business and then that. Far as I know birds build nests in trees not on the ground.
That bird was asking for it. The cat was way to tolerant and gave chances . Maybe bird should have thought about family waiting on food instead of fighting in street or trying to catch a cat for dinner.
