Hi, unfortunately i failed my module 1 test on thursday due to locking the rear wheel during the emergency stop, reality is i went into the stop at far to quick a speed (42mph on test sheet). the earliest retest my instructor can get me on his cb500 is early may, there is a test date on tuesday morning but he is unavailable is there any reason why i can't use my zxr400? the bike is unrestricted has the speed displayed properly in mph is taxed and tested (id need to get it insured once i confirm i can use it) ive arranged for a mate to drop me at the test centre in his van so i can get the bike there legally only thing i don't know is can i do a direct access test on a 400cc bike? it puts out roughly 44kw which is above the 35kw limit but i can't actually prove that aside form knowing the bike isn't restricted. also i assume id need to display l plates for the test? i rang the dsa call centre but they didn't know and just gave me the number for the test centre who wouldn't answer the phone so does anyone on here know?

It can be done, but I'd advise against it.

My mate did his test on his own FZ6. He was running an indonesian license with an international driving permit and insurance that allowed him to do it. It was legal in the eyes of the law, just hassle with the insurers.

The more important factor is have you ever tried to do a U turn in a road on a sportsbike!? I had a ZXR250 and the steering lock on that was horrendous.

You'd also have issues with trying to get the thing balanced with the clutch and back brake. Considering that sportsbikes usually carry their weight a lot lower than nakeds, you'd probably overbalance and put your foot down.

You'd be putting way too much work for yourself on the obstacle course too.

Logistically yes you can do the test because the machine meets the criteria. From a practical aspect, it's pretty foolish. Hence why most folk who did their test on a 125, even though they had Mito's/RS'/NSR's opted to do it on a training school bike.

i can do a u turn in a 7 metre gap on it which is half a metre less than the test track but yes it does involve alot of standing it up on the rear brake, the figure of 8 is more of a concern as there's just nowhere i could practice it beforehand but the run off area in the test centre to do it in is quite big so should be doable, if it meets the criteria then i may aswell do it, it's only £15.50 for the test so not alot to lose just didn't know if i could do it on a 400 and still not be restricted on what i can ride afterwards not that it'd matter as i bought the 400 for when i pass. only other problem i could envisage is if the test centre asked me to prove it meets the power requirements as i have no idea how i could

Hand them a brochure or a spec sheet/workshop manual with the details on. As long as you are sufficiently familiar with the bike, then I don't see any problems with the test itself. But you already highlighted that you don't have any convenient place to practice.

well i went for the test this morning with the zxr outcome, fail went through it all nice and fine up until u turn, got all the way through u turn just had to ride forward out of it and along line and stop, and for some strange reason as i went to sit bike up i looked down at the floor, momentary loss of balance and right foot went out gutted to be honest had put alot of practice into getting the slow manoeuvres right with the crappy zxr lock had them right then screwed up by not keeping my head up, only had to go a yard further forward and id have passed, oh well next one is now booked for next wednesday and will be with instructors cb500 so really should pass this time

Don't you have to provide documentation as proof of the bike's power output?

I'm sure I read that somewhere regards the possibility of using an RS 125 to take the test, but that some may have it unrestricted.

Also, if you do your Mod1 on a < 500cc bike, you won't be able to get an unrestricted licence.

Edit:

Looks like I could be wrong about the 500cc comment? Was pretty certain I had read that also unless they've changed the rules since October.

I'm glad I didn't have my bike before I passed my test because it wouldn't have been easy doing the figure of eight's and the slalom on a sports bike that didn't have a good turning angle in small spaces. Probably achievable if you're confident enough but it won't be half as easy as doing it on one of their 500's.

slalom and figure 8's were easy, slalom was litteraly clutch to half way and blipping throttle to keep it steady, figure 8 was just a case of taking a nice smooth circuit the only resriction to it is having to go between last 2 yellow cones. always knew the u turn would be the difficult one and i had it still can't explain now why i looked down examiner was there nodding his head at me having done it then i suddenly looked down bike tipped and foot went out and that was that

I wouldn't want to do it on a sports bike.

If you really really want it, look at hiring a bike for a day, or insure a friends more upright bike.
