Hey Guys,

I'm going to be getting a Yamaha r125, and my best quote for TPFT is £1200, and TPO is only £380. (Have a pretty tight budget)

I have a ground anchor in my garage, Almax series 3 + Squire lock, and alarmed disc lock.

If I go out and about, I'll always make sure the wheel is chained to something and I have the disc lock. If you were in my position, what would you do?

If you're getting brand new one then defo go for TPF&T.

If it was second hand R125 worth £2k then I would probably take the risk and go for TPO.. it makes £820 difference per year. Don't fool yourself that your chain and ground anchor will stop the bike from being stolen.
Look at the bright side.. if it gets stolen you lose only £1180 not £2k Wink

How much is the excess with that?

Say its a brand new R125 what about £3k?

Option one you pay £380 it doesn't get nicked you loose nothing it does you loose £3k

Option two you pay £1200 you are £820 worst off

It does get nicked you loose £3k + £820 they value you bike lower (because they do) at 2.5k, you have a £500 excess so you only get £2k

Lost £3,820 gained £2k

Total Loss £1820 TPFT
Total Loss £3000 TPO

Therefore even if you bike does get nicked you are only £1180 better off.

Not worth it IMO.

If its a brand new one (£4K), just bear in mind that if you drop it or crash it as many owners seem to (check the r125 forums for many stories!), you're looking at literally hundreds to repair it even for fairly minor drop. TPO won't cover you for anything if its your fault, and if you're buying on finance, you'll end up paying finance on a bike you can no longer afford to repair.

If its used and you're paying £2Kish, fair enough.

Buy a used YBR125 or CG125, pass my A2 test, and get a Ninja 250 or bigger that'll cost less to insure.

If buying on finance don't the finance company generally insist on fully comp insurance?

Depends on whether its finance or a personal loan. Black Horse never said my missus had to have fully comp cause it wasn't secured against the bike.

I agree. Black Horse usually insist on personal loans when you buy a bike.

When I worked at a Yamaha dealers a while back they had an offer on for either £99 deposit finance or free TPO insurance for a year. If you're buying new then this is surely an option.

I agree, 125 sports bikes just arnt worth the hassle. Its great that the bike doesnt look like a learner, but as soon as you spot the massive red and white L the games over. your gonna have to fork out a lot of cash for a bike that will cost you a lot more in cash.

Spend 500 on a CG. rack up some NCB. Go take your restricted test. Then get something with 33bhp.
