Going on a 5 day bike trip to cornwall, only from Portsmouth so not looking at mega-miles considering 5 days. My girlfriend is coming with me so looking for nice places to go? maybe something to do ? I am swaying towards less riding more chilling as work has been quite stressful lately so I'd kinda like to just go relax for a few days, I can do a solo big mileage trip later in the year (probably Scotland!)

Plan was to buzz down the M27 (yawn) and go through dartmoor then stop somewhere Plymouth way maybe a bit further, then head down to Sennen Cove or somewhere similar.. but open to ideas, places to visit etc.

Probably going to be camping.

Was going to suggest Sennen, I've stayed in a cottage in the village it's self, rest of the family have also stopped (the year before) in the campsite at the top of the cliffs. They thought that campsite was good but I think the walk to the beach was a bit further than hopped.

Eden project would be good to go to, was new-ish when I went, would imagine it is looking very mature and nice. Porthtowan is another nice beach village, I seem to remember the Blue Bar being good, although that was a few years ago. Mevagissey is a nice harbour village, would be good for a morning or something.

Sorry not much more help, all I ever do when I go to Cornwall is play in the sea and enjoy a bit of sun on the beach. Thumbs Up

Wouldnt bother with Eden myself. Head over to The Lizard for nice views, good camping, walking etc. Im in Porthleven which is a nice little fishing village. Park here and walk the coast path to Rinsey and back. Loads of old mine ruins on cliff tops. stunning Thumbs Up

The National Seal Sanctuary, at Gweek? Nice "warm and fuzzy" half a day out.

Fowey's nice, with some good walks along the cliffs from there; plenty of little hideaway nooks to chill out (or whatever) in.

I enjoyed Eden when I went 2 years ago, I also enjoyed Goonhilly, but I think that has closed now.

I am not your average female though, so don't listen to anything I suggest as I am quite happy getting oily whilst doing maintenance on my bikes and packing a tent up on my bike and disappearing for a few days.

Go the coastal route via Swanage, you won't regret it...and head over to Lulworth Cove (the YHA has a camping barn for about £12 a night, but you can set up camp in the grounds too), there is a castle there, and the cove itself to explore...then you could meander along to Salcombe Bay...it's so picturesque (I stayed at the YHA there too) its at the top of the cliff and looks out over the bay.

I'm probably camping in Swanage end of the month, it's supposed to be unusually warm there or something, not sure what there is to do though?

Head to Captain Jaspers at Plymouth barbican for somewhere to stop, then go via the Torpoint ferry in Plymouth for about 7 miles of awesome roads (you'll probably still appreciate it with a wench on your back). The ferry is 30p, so you may want to extend your budget a bit.

from there, to Bodmin, Truro etc, then go up around the coast via Bude. All sorts of places to stop.

I used to live in Downderry in between Torpoint and Looe and Mattspratuk is dead right about the road from Torpoint through Antony, it's bikers heaven but there's also been some fearful accidents on it and the police have occasional blitzes so if you use it watch out. Have a great time.

I have friends who go to Swanage regularly. They say they mooch about and explore, go leaping off the rocks into the sea, do absolutely nothing, lots of walking along the coast, there are some castles around there.

Thanks for all the ideas.. I've drawn up a route and done some research, found a couple of good camp sites so far and I think they are all doable

Thursday - Portsmouth to swanage sit on beach, then off to a campsite in dartmoor - mostly main roads, this should be longest riding day at 180 miles however half of that is motorway other half main a road.

friday - dartmoor to a nice camp site in st ives no planned stops, nice beach at st ives for rest of day

saturday - st ives to gweek to see seal sanctuary then up to Lerryn as I quite fancy trying some kayaking for a couple of hours - camp local

Sunday - head back to swanage or bournemouth maybe, not really planned that

Monday - head home

total is 512 miles, mostly main A roads.

Google Map Link

THE PROBLEM

The weather forecast isn't looking too great! 8deg max (feels like 4) and showers on thursday, light rain friday and saturday.

So not entirely sure what to think!! I could take the car but looking at about £180 in petrol compared to about £40 on the bike Rolling Eyes

I'm not too keen on rain camping! especially on a bike, sucks packing away a wet tent then getting it out again in the rain the next night Laughing had a few nights like that in France which didn't impress me! And I think we all know the girlfriend isn't going to be too impressed with getting soaked every day.

At the minute we are still planning the trip BUT looking for a last minute back up plan.... does anyone have any ideas??

Can be anything really, obviously in the car though. I've thought about hopping on the channel tunnel but weather there isnt much better and not a lot to do in northern france from my opinion/experience. plus this adds a massive cost to everything.

I personally would just have one campsite in Cornwall, if you pick a fairly central place you can have days out to St Ives, Hayle (best Cornish pasties there), Dartmoor etc and that bway you are not constantly putting a tent up & down.

I did it that way a couple of years ago, stopped in St Austell and travelled out from there each day.

That does sound a good idea, only concern is that we'd be under pressure to get back to a certain place each night. My tent is quick pitch so its no real hassle putting up and taking down, but bike is probably going to be a hassle to load up, not entirely sure how I'm getting two peoples worth of camping stuff on a bike with no luggage yet Confused lol

This is working out quite stressful for a stress free holiday Laughing part of me just wants to jump in the car with the tent and go camp it up in the New Forest, cheap and local but not sure what there is to do. Weather forecast shows sun every day too (although still only 8deg but no rain forecast) annoyingly the best weather in the area shows as Portsmouth Laughing maybe I should camp in my dads garden. Laughing

If you're in the camping and caravan club, I stayed at Fursdon Farm campsite on my tour. It's between Liskeard and St Ive (NB, NOT St Ives)

Very nice folks, gave me a cream tea when I arrived and everything. Under a tenner. Open air swimming pool on site. A smaller site so unlikely to be hoardes of screaming kids. Basically a small field at the back of the farmhouse but enough of a hedge to keep the wind off if it gets that way. Good toilets and shower area, carpets and everything.

Try here We have been there a few times and are really friendly, plus if you fancy a few beers of an evening they have two bars on site to choose from.

I think we're now going "Grand Touring" Mr. Green

I know it's not right, but the bike was working out too much hassle especially with the threat of rain, no luggage and so on...

Taking the car, sticking with the Cornwall route, most of the planned stops can be done in the rain so at least by car we'll stay dry.

There's barely much more storage in the car than the bike so may still struggle with luggage Laughing (sports cars hey!) but main thing is it's less hassle, less stress, more comfort.

Will go away on the bike on my own soon after, solo touring is much less hassle unless you have a massive bike and lots of luggage.

Beast, that place is well expensive! seems you have to book a pitch from saturday-saturday too Shocked

Bloody hell Shocked it's been a few years since i camped there, the last couple of times we have had a caravan due to my daughter being with us, im sure back then it was only £7 a night without electric hook up, anyway there are plenty of camp sites around the area you should get cheap enough.

I enjoyed the bike parking - a few feet away from the front door. Had to get a bus to the entrance when I went by car Very Happy
