Hi does anyone know what voltage I should be gettin across rectifier on a gpz500 engine? It isn't connected to the loom just to the stator. And is there a particular way it should be wire in. I have a black, brown and White wires and the 3 yellow to the stator. I get a 50ish volt reading across the black and the White and nothing on black and brown. Does this sound right? Also does it matter what way round the yellow wires are connected?

12 to 13V is too low with a running engine. you should be at the mid 13v to 14.7 to have a healthy system. Turn all the lights on and run the engine to test properly.

Once started (with all lights on to test the alternator) it should ideally be near as poss to 14.7v but not under 13.5v.. the alternator will need to produce at least 13v to overcome the battery resistance to start getting current into it....so...your below it's no good.


just to be clear i have this engine in a quad and havent used the gpz loom so will be connectin the reg into the original quad loom. shouldn't i get a reading from the reg if i just test across the black and brown (or) white wires from the reg

i havent got the reg conntected to anything at the moment apart from the stator. so when the bike is running (batt power only) im getiing a reading from the reg across the black (neg?) and white wires but its reading around 50v which doesnt seem right!

could someone tell me what i should connect the 3 wires to? i though black should go to neg and the brown and white wires could just go to the pos side. have i got this right?

yeh thats what i have. on the wiring dia it shows the black goin to neg brown joins the ign wire from key switch and white joins pos from batt. really quite confused i dont want to connect into loom if im gettin 50v!

You're getting 50v because you are reading across the negative and stator AC.
Put simply to read:
Any white wire with any other white wire = 50v AC (Make sure the meter is on AC as well).
Black = Negative
Red = Positive
Brown = (I think it's a switched or ignition live)

So for the output you measure across RED and BLACK using DC on the meter.
Checking the stator is easy, like I said any white wire with any other white wire and AC. Make sure to check all 3 wires.
