Hi peeps, as you know I'm not the best when it comes to technology, so I rely on your help... Very Happy

So, I have a normal (soon to be old fashioned) 14" tube tv, which is basically a monitor. It's plugged into Freeview harddrive which is a Humax PVR-9200T.

What I want to know is, in time for the digital switch over, will my kit be rendered useless? Or because of how it's set up and because of the Freeview box, I should be fine?

I am really reluctant to go and buy a new telly, just because of the switch over...as there is nothing wrong with this tv.

Please assist me, the less jargon the better. Cheers peeps. Thumbs Up

The TV tuner won't work, but that's what the freeview box is for.

As DaFrostyOne said, you'll be fine - the TV is just acting as a monitor, although when switch-over acually happens you'll have to retune your freeview box to pick up changed/new channels.

If you are already watching digital telly, why would you need a new aerial?

The aerial doesn't make much difference. There is no difference between an analogue and a digital aerial. Different aerials have different amounts of gain (i.e. give the signal more power). If you aren't receiving a good digital signal try changing the cabling between the freeview box and the aerial. At this point the signal is still analogue and quality of the coax cable actually makes a difference unlike expensive HDMI cables where the signal is digital. Thumbs Up

Digital terrestrial TV uses the spectrum a lot more efficiently allowing for more channels. One disadvantage of the system is that the signal degrades less gracefully. I.e. the quality is good for longer, however after a certain point it drops off the wall and it can't be watched. Whereas with analogue TV even when the signal quality is low you cant still sort of watch it.

The chances are that people who claim to need a new aerial for digital TV actually received a crappy analogue signal and just needed move their current aerial or upgrade the cabling.

Also at the digital switchover the digital signal can be increased in power as it no longer has to worry about it's affect to the analogue signal.

Well the sky plus connection needs a satellite dish because the signal comes from a satellite in space. The shape of the dish focuses the signal into a small area where it is more powerful bit like a magnifying glass focusing light.

The reason you have lots of varying aerials is because (by the sounds of things) you have a shared aerial system. This makes it all more complicated and you will need a stronger signal. The shared aerials make it really quite complex for satellite signals.

I had an idea for a university project to remove all this hardware complexity and move it into a more software based system. Unfortunately it was too much work for the time I had.

Who is doing the telling? A high gain aerial will help if the signal quality is low, but chances are the actual aerial isn't the problem.
