I mostly like to be the grey man... subtle when I'm likely to be noticed. Hence road legal exhaust, correct sized number plate... and sticking to the limit in 30s. Usually in 4th gear.
The "rules" from my old motorclub:
30 means 30
40 means 40
50 means 50 (pretty much, -ish)
NSL means No Sodding Limit
Having said all that, the number of tailgaters I get when I travel at 30 exactly coupled with the extra vunerability I feel on the bike (in the car, I'll often just set the cruise and ignore them... on the bike I know if they do manage to touch my rear wheel, I'll be crashing) means I now often find myself doing 33/34 just to keep them a little bit happy ____________________ Honda Varadero 125cc => Suzuki Bandit 650 33bhp => 77bhp =>

I try and stick to 30 limits, but sometimes they start the 30 zone 1/4 a mile before a village and 1/4 after you leave the village.
On Sunday coming back from Hartside to Hexham, there are a few villages like the above. ____________________ Suzuki GSF600 K3 (in the fastest colour, black). |

To be honest, it depends on the sort of riding I'm doing.
If I'm out on a big group hoon with the usual group then speeding through a 40 or less will result in a massive bollocking from the bloke who sort of runs the rides. There are several, good reasons for this, the first and most obvious being the kittens argument; the times of day we go out, usually summer evenings, there are bound to be kids around playing. Added to this, we tend to use similar routes, so becoming a frequent nuisance for busybodies is worth avoiding, and also there are usually at least a couple of bikes with cameras on board, and should plod want to view the footage, at least it'll show we've been sensible where it really matters I suppose. It's quite funny to be honest, adds a bit of excitement to the ride, as everyone plays by the same rules, it's a bit like the pit stops in F1, with everyone screaming to the line, then anchors on and pootling through at what feels like snail's pace! You can sometimes see a couple of bikes ahead of you, not that far, but in reality they're probably a couple of minutes ahead, and you get to watch them hit the national and scream off while you've still got half the village to get through!
Having said all of this, I'd be lying if I claimed I never speed through 30 limits, I live in the arse end of nowhere, where many of the little villages are literally a couple of houses defined by a slightly lower limit than the rest of the road, so although I would nearly always slow down and pay close attention, it's not always to the limit, but down to what I deem to be an appropriate speed for the conditions.
Similarly, a lot of the decent biking roads round here have a couple of nice corners in the villages that immediately precede them, lots of visibility, so I'll sometimes tip in and accelerate through a bit, provided visibility is good, to get a bit of heat into the sides of the tyres, then backing off and back to the limit as soon as it's upright again.
Also, when burbling through a village, as soon as I see the little white disc with a black line, I have a quick scan of what's between me and it, and if I'm happy with the situation, back to either second or first gear and pin it.
Basically, I have no personal rules about following limits, although if I'm with the group, I follow the agreed rules, when I'm on my own it's whatever feels appropriate, I've seen 3 figues in a 30 (probably speedo inaccuracy officer) but conversely I've held up other traffic by travelling at less than 30 when that felt more appropriate for the conditions.
30's are usually there for a good reason, but that doesn't mean they're not as open to interpretation as any other limit, just use your noggin. ____________________ McGee - "When I go to the mall and see all the high school girls, I have to have DO NOT TOUCH THE GIRLS written on my hand. Treat it like any other 30 road really, usually do 35 - 40 as my bike will not cruise in 4th at 30mph very smoothly and 3rd is a bit too revvy which probably wouldn't matter if I had the stock zaust on but I do not ____________________ KTM 990 SMT & Suzuki DR-Z 400 SM |

Strangely, whenever I travel through Sussex villages at 30mph I find the Range-Rover driving locals tend to get quite shirty at having being slowed from their usual 50mph...
So ignore the NIMBY fucktards would be my advice. ____________________ NSR125RR - ZXR750H1 - ZX9R E1 - GSF600S - GSF600SK3 - VFR400-NC30 - SV1000N - ST1100-R - CBR900RR-R - GSF1200SK5 - GSF600SK1 - VFR1200FA - GSXR1000K2 - ZZR1400 D8F
