 |
|
We have all had them, the ones where we think 'oh f**k this is gonna hurt'.
Well i just had one, i went to see a mate who lives on the other side of Chatam, so off i set, i get onto the A2 at bexleyheath and sped off at a reasonable pace. As i went past the M25 turn off the traffic got lighter so i wound the throttle round a little more, as i passed slightly illegal speeds the front got a little twitchy, then alot twitchy, then i thought F**K!!!! as i wobbled up the A2 at quite a speed.
I then done what most people do and i closed the throttle........ big mistake, the a lot twitchy became mega twitchy, but strangely i had the time to pull over to the 1st lane while handle bars wobbled around threatening to pitch me off at any time, then i remembered to open the throttle again and ride through the shake.
Needless to say i rode a little more sedately after that and i went home to change my under wear.
So lets have your stories of those proper butt clenching, heart stopping, 'SHIT I'M GONNA DIE' moments. |

About 15 years ago, when I was inexperienced on the road, I was on a push bike heading down the uxbridge road at a heck of a sprint. It was quiet early morning, the road was empty. I was on a 2 lane part of the road and I was approaching a parked lorry I checked behind to see a car which looked a rather long way up the road.
I had time, I moved over into his lane to give myself good clearance on the lorry. The car came belting up behind me, tooted his horn, revved the engine, shoved the nose of his car next to my right leg.
What I should have done was put myself in a position where he couldnt do that to me in the first place and rode the middle of that lane.
What I did, was to move over closer to the lorry to let him past.
The door of the lorry was suddenly flung open as wide as it could go.
Now, I was learning forward in a 'racey' position so I was fairly low. This also meant the bottom of the door was about in line with my neck. Oh crap I was about to lose my head.... I swerved right, hit the back of the car as he romped past, just ducked under the door, ricocheted into the curb, where my ninja skills (or luck and physics) propped my bike back up and I sorta rolled to a calm stop.
No damage done, the car driver shot up the road and away, no bumps or scratches or anything. But good lord where my pants brown.
Thats been about the only time in my life where I have really had to stop and get a coffee to calm down from crapping myself.
The upside of the experience was I learned to never allow myself to be 'bullied' into something I am uncomfortable with on the road. |

My main one was passing a turning on my left. I'd been chasing a Fazer along the A44, just leaving Bormyard so we were leaving the 30mph bit. Cock in a beemer waits for the Fazer, didn't see me following and almost turns into me but stops at the last second. My boots brushed along the side of the car... felt very sick and promptly pulled over to smoke half a pack of fags in one go ____________________ Triumph Daytona 675 track bike + girlfriend's Honda Hornet 600

Beemer again!!
Coming around a long left hander. Big green on the left so you could see around the bend. I was looking and tanking it, probably 35 This is a 2 lane road but cars are always parked on the right side so as I am coming around banked over a bit flat out. Then on the side of the green there is a tree so it gets in my line of vision for about 1 second. As the tree gets out of sight there is a beemer about 5-10m away. FUCCCCKKKKK!!!! Front brake jammed on. Back end sliding everywhere. Stopped within a metre of his bumper. He had a wife and kids in there and whats more, that was before my CBT so no test, no insurance I used to do my papers on it for about 2 weeks how silly of me. As they are trials tires I just rode on the green around his car, back on the rode and fucking screamed it up some back roads
So that must have meant either I missed him or he pulled out of a space as the tree was in my line of sight. Either way it was obviously his fault as he drove a Big Moron Wagon ____________________ Rusty '02 Vito Camper + CBR600F3 |

nothing REALLY scary.
Worst one was when I was 16 and still on the ped. On the way to school for a GCSE, was morning and I was nackered and half asleep. I came to a set of lights that i navigate daily and know well. They're the type that (turning right btw) have a green light and a green arrow. Light = go IF ITS CLEAR. Arrow = Other lights are red so you're clear to go.
Well I saw a green light and thought "lovely, green" and turned. I promptly noticed the bus rapidly approaching my left, beeping. He missed the back of me by about a metre. I shat myself, woke up sharpish and rode very fucking carefully the rest of the way. ____________________ 57 Huoniao HN125-8 - , 97 Kawasaki GPZ500S -

Had not long upgraded from a 125 to a restricted cbr600f, rode for an hour to get to an 'awesome' road, got there and got stuck behind a bus. Wasn't having any of it and with my new found power gunned it past it, only to get stuck behind 2 cars and a van all traveling at 30 in a 60 almost bumper to bumper. At the first sight of open road again i opened her up but not knowing the road the next corner had blended it and before a new it where I originally saw road there was now a car, no where to pull in stop or anything so I just pinned the throttle open and went for it.
To this day I don't know how I missed the front of the van and the car but I did, I know I was doing a stupid speed and a stupid thing, and I'm well aware I probably wouldn't have been the only one that was killed or seriously injured. It has honesty made me a much more careful rider ____________________ Ybr125(10)>CBR600fY(00)>Bandit650N(58) |

This…
Travelling along this long’ish sweeping right hander, probably doing around 60 instead of the limit 40.
As I banked I reaslied someone had taken a long time to turn into the Gupshill pub. This meant there was a trail of cars behind.
The only option, as the car was blocking the oncoming lane. Was to take the passenger side of cars between them and the curb. Doing about 50-60 past them was a heart stopping moment.

I've had a few "Oooh shit!" moments in over ten years of biking. I can only describe the feeling is a mixture of impending doom and ever tightening stomach muscles... You certainly feel alive after getting away with it, what with the subsequent endorphin rush.
Anyhow, yes. In no particular order:
Overtaking a lorry round a blind bend, only for a dustcart to come the other way
Jumping a humpback bridge at speed only to find a traffic jam the other side
Going through a nightime motorway crash scene at over 80mph with debris and the husks of dead cars all over the road
On a nightime rideout mistakenly speeding up thinking the road continued straight (I could see road ahead in distance) when infact that was a private road and the real road swept round a nasty downhill left hander
Rabbit running across road passing between front and rear wheels
Attempting to get KD 30 seconds in to a ride and almost highsiding the ZX9 (ended up hanging over the front light)
etc etc, probably a few more. ____________________ NSR125RR - ZXR750H1 - ZX9R E1 - GSF600S - GSF600SK3 - VFR400-NC30 - SV1000N - ST1100-R - CBR900RR-R - GSF1200SK5 - GSF600SK1 - VFR1200FA - GSXR1000K2 - ZZR1400 D8F
