I’ve recently found out that a policy I have taken out has conditions on it I am not happy with but have already paid a deposit. I will be cancelling before the policy even starts and know I am entitled to the full deposit back. The insurers will no doubt try it on, what do I need to say to them on the phone in order for them to not do so i.e. financial ombudsman. I know they can’t do it but need to know roughly what line I should be going to down to let them know I aint gonna be messed around with.

If you've done it over the phone or internet, then quote Distance Selling Regulations (2000?) to them. They have to give you a full refund if you cancel within 7 days (might be 14 days, I can't remember). Make sure you send a WRITTEN cancellation within this period by Recorded Delivery. I'd also fax it from a machine with delivery reports and email it with delivery reports. They will try it on of course, but if you've got proof of cancellation within the Distance Selling reg's time frame they know they've got no leg to stand on. If they do try it contact Trading Standards (or whatever their latest name is, Consumer Advice?).

Sorry for the vagueness, but my brain isn't functioning after a very long day.

Yes. And there should be a section explaining your right to cancell under these regs and how to do so in your documentation.

When you buy insurance, ovcer the phone or internet, usually the company should send all the necessary paperwork, for you to check that the details given are correct.

Now if you found a clause that you do not like, you are perfectly in your rights to cancel the policy. Even on insurance policy, they have the so called cooling-off period, where you can cancel your insurance... no question asked... and receive your full refund!

So for the OP original question: just say that you want to cancel the policy, full stop! no need to mention any agency or such!
Remember that insurance company do record all their calls, so if they try it on ask to speak to a supervisor/manager.

One thing you will have to do is return the certificate of insurance.
