I have a table of monthly totals, what I want is to highlight the numbers different colours based on whether they are higher or lower than the previous month. Is there an automated way of doing this?

I can do it to a 1 cell at a time and get it working but when I try to use multiple cells it moans.

You cannot use a direct reference to a worksheet range in a Conditional Formatting formula.

I tried a simple one referencing a range and it worked
Condition 1
"cell value is" : "greater than" : "=sum(b1:d1)"
format red background

if you can imagine the conditonal format box with that info in it

if a2 > a1: Red cell

Then drag the formula accross all of the other cells. provided you don't lock the references with $ symbols it'll do it all the way along.
