Hi all. I own a 2006 CBR125 and have been on it for about a month now. I've been on top of oil and chain etc but in the last week or so I've been having an issue.

When in top gear the bike slipped out of gear the other day doing 50-60 (may be the issue - should I be in 6th at these speeds?) the bike slipped out of gear; my revs shot up so I immediately slammed the clutch in and then I started slowing down whilst trying to find out what-the-hell-gear I'm in.

Nothing else happens for a week. Today I was riding home and it happened again. I have to go on fast roads from cold so I always go really easy on the bike until I've done about 2 or so miles. (40-50)

I really struggled to get back into a reasonable gear for the speed I was doing. Finally got there but I noticed that when gearing up or down there was a little delay where the revs shot up and then the bike found its gear.

I've heard that you have to be a little more firm with the gear pedal on the CBR but the later issues have really worried me. Any thoughts?

One thing I've heard is that I may have too much engine oil in? Filled her to around max.

Still paranoid after my last crappy bike.

Had this with my CBR125 (Also an '06 as it would happen). Just requires a very firm push into 6th. Don't do it clutchless, and try not to "flick" the lever with your toe, give it a good positive push.

Also worth checking your chain tension. Might be worth tightening / slackening it very slightly to see if it helps. Chain tension has quite a big effect on the smoothness of gear changes. Also, if your chain is knackered and has tight spots, that won't help!

Yep, make sure your firm with the gear changes and check your chain tension. I had a problem with my CBR125 when I first got it and it was on 2000 or so miles on the clock. That was mostly falling out of second and once falling out of fifth while overtaking a lorry on the Snake Pass.
6th is a cruising gear for pottering along at 60 or whizzing downhill at 70. Nowt wrong with 5th, tho your engine will scream a bit higher.

Hi

Try adjusting the gear lever a little lower which will mean you will naturally push it more when changing gear.

All the best

Keith

Does the lever bolt directly to the engine or via a linkage?

If it has a linkage check the rose joints are free and not worn out.

Worn linkages can cause poor gear change action.

After a few more trips this has only happened once more. It seems to be when the bike is still cold and I'm trying to get some speed up in higher gears (such as overtaking).

I've gone a little easier on the old girl and all seems well. I will however take the advice of people like Keith and have a fiddle about.

Hi

Depends on what I need and how urgently I need it. In a hurry then I just pop into Chells.

Often get stuff through BS Bikes in Stoke.

Some common stuff I order through Wemoto.

All the best

Keith

For genuine Honda parts;
https://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/

For cheaper pattern parts /service items;
https://www.wemoto.com/

Lots of types of oil, and a discount for BCF members;
https://www.opieoils.co.uk/

All are very reputable.

Keep away from https://www.moto-racing.co.uk/! They come up in alot of Google searches for parts, but I've dealt with the guy, and he was a complete nob end when I had problems, and would refuse phone calls, ignore emails etc.

Oh, and when it comes time for new tyres, try a pair of Bridgestone BT-39SS 's. There's not many decent tyres that come in the right sizes for the CBR125, but those do and they're great tyres!

You shouldn't have to change the oil filter on a CBR125 unless it's damaged. It's just a thin tray with fine gauze in the centre.
Looks similar to the one in this post https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=2824326&highlight=#2824326

You just pull it out give it a careful clean, and put it back in the same way that it came out. You will have to remove the clutch cover to get at it.

Issue came back. Seems I need a little help in smacking that gear home.

What can i adjust to help? Thinking it's the pedal. Having a look at it with my dad tomorrow where we'll be tightening the chain slightly, cleaning and oiling it, changing the oil/cleaning the filter. Owt else?

Hi

Check the chain condition. Also check the front sprocket (just in case it is in far worse condition than the back).

Also check the clutch adjustment

All the best

Keith
