Out of interest really as there is a strong arguement for them and also one against them. Do you use them or not and why, and any personal experiences with them good or bad?

Didn't have them on my first bike (NSR125) due to being a biking newbie and n00b, and them not being available for the NSR. Was interested but wasn't confident enough mechanically to fit them at that point. They were already fitted to my ZX6R and did help me, as I dropped the bike a few times and it saved the fairing from all damage including sliding down the road at about 15-20mph without a mark on the fairing. Bought some for my TL, but hadn't gotten around to fitting them as it spent as much time when I owned it in a bike garage or sitting not used when I was in hospital than it did on the roads. They would have saved the ZX6R from damage (it had a dented frame from a catseye after a wheelie went wrong with the previous owner) but could have possibly dented it where they mounted to the frame/ engine. Had R&G ones fitted to the ZX6R and bought the same ones for the TL as have seen lots of nasty damage done by the cheaper fairing mounted ones. Would get and fit R&G ones to any bike I have in the future as the cost of them compares to the cost they save is a lot less than the cost of them, and the damage risked by having them is a lot lower than the risks by not having them. Wouldn't even use the fairing mounted one, would be better off unbolting them and holding the fairing on with a zip tie I reckon.

So, anyone got any interesting stories or things to say about them? And what ones are you refering to, as there are different mounting ones available with different arguements for and against each.

When I buy my second bike I'll be doing my best to see about fitting frame mounted crash bungs - only decent quality ones though. In a crash, the cheaper bungs transmit crash shock (that would have otherwise been absorbed by the fairing/brackets) directly to the frame, decreasing the likelyhood of fairing damage, but increasing the chance of frame damage. I won't know until I bin my second bike - and I don't have it yet.

More to follow in several months time Very Happy .

I have engine bars on my ER5 so I doubt I need mushrooms.

Is it worth fitting them anyway, if now possible, to save the paint on the engine bars? Laughing

I'd like to remove the engine bars at some point if I can because I'll only be allowed 33bhp so I want as little weight as possible, hopefully I can just fit mushrooms instead.

With a 33BHP commuter like an ER5 I seriously doubt that the weight given by a couple of crash bars will have any large outcome on the performance of your bike. In my opinion, it's really not worth changing them. Not unless you race in the ER5 series anyway.

I most definitely have crash protectors, I figure that if I protect the engine, frame and fuel tank, everything else can be repaired or swapped quite easily.

I have the upper and lower protectors - https://www.mad-als.com/r1/pages/r1q.htm

yep without meaning to sound offensive the best way of looseing weight off a bike is going on a diet, unless your underweight then you should be ok anyway Very Happy but you'd be hard pushed to loose a tank of petrols worth of weight unless you start takeing your seat off or other such madness...

For the first time ever owning my cx i managed to drop it, not an iffy camber or stone in the road, thought my side stand was down, it wasn't over i go.. the fog liight on the left side took a stight battering (but pulled it straight) and a tiny scuff on the engine bars... thats it! Very Happy if the petrol didn't leak out then i'd probably just lay it on its side all the time Very Happy actually i'd have to pick it up again... hmm perhaps not... but it would make changeing tyres easyer...

I have fairing mounted mushrooms on my NC30, so far they have saved my fairing twice (both stationary mind) one was when she was knocked over in gale force winds, and the other when i dropped her in London Embarassed All she suffered was scratched bar ends.

I would get them but I don't know anywhere that does them for a GSXR400R. Anyone?

No, i dont plan on using them anyway. Smile
I have R&G bungs on my hornet, i had Motrax Magic mushrooms but decided they looked very weedy compared to the R&G ones.
Dead easy to fit, and hopefully will stop my engine slideing down the road.

I've got crash bars on the Super Tenere, only recently noticed those mushroomy things and predominantly only on "sports" bike styles.

Might have to look into it, might make the Super Tenere lighter for me to hold up Laughing (mind you, won't make it any shorter for my fat-ass stumpy legs, LOL)

Thankfully I havent 'used' them, but I do have a pair fitted, yes. And if you are considering buying some, shop around a bit and make sure you dont get ripped off...at one stall at the NEC they were on sale for £75 a pair, I haggled and got them for £35!!!

I have to agree with that one. This damage is from a 40ish mph slide. The engine cover did end up with a slight hole in it, but other than that and a small patch on the fairing it was undamaged.

Have R&G lowers and swingarm mount bungs, also have the mid panel ones but have yet to fit them due to needing the fairing cut... will get around to it shortly!! Have never "tested" them but I'll only ever buy R&G as I've seen how much they have saved bikes (danny, mcJ included) etc and won't even consider any other brand.

Ahh, have you got an ART can on yours?

Still, I cant be bothered to spend the money on them... Its a very nice bike and all, but i dont want to have to spend too much money on it... I'd rather save the money.

I've got them (were already on the bike when I bought it) and they've saved it from any damage in a couple of 0mph drops.

R&G are bringing out swingarm and fork ones for my bike later in the year and I'll certainly be checking them out. I'm not that fussed about scuffing fairings or denting the can but protecting the important metal bits can only be good.

There's always going to be that 1% of accidents where they don't help, but I'll put my money on the 99% where they do. Thumbs Up

Crash bars were all ready fitted on the ER5.

Chrome, meh.

Never mind, would rather have them and not need them, than need them and not have them.
