PostPosted: 19:06 - 20 Apr 2011    Post subject: GS 500 33bhp top speed? Reply with quote

I have been riding my GS just under 3 weeks now as have just passed Very Happy It is restricted to 33bhp as i am under 21 and the restriction certificate says its restricted to 92mph. I have gotten 85mph out of it and probably could have more, obviously on private land Thumbs Up

I have been scanning the rest of the forum, and some people say they should do around 110mph?! Has mine just been poorly restricted? It's 1998 model, 12k on clocks, runs fine and just basically wondering. To be honest though i'm not wanting to go faster than what i can do at the moment as i AM new to motorbikes and don't want to kill myself already Wink Just wondering why mine is slower than other restricted 500's.

Thanks,
Tom.

They're not restricted by speed, they have a finite amount of power, and the speed will depend on gearing, wind resistance and weight. So how they can specify a maximum speed I don't know!

A restricted bike might just kiss 100mph. Unrestricted I'd expect a GS500 in decent nick to get 110-115mph. Mine was rubbish and struggled to 100 unrestricted.

I'd say no way would they do 110 restricted so you don't need to worry..
I have reach around 95 i think.. Private land.. But could maybe go a little higher..

I find the wind uncomfortable at that speed so i don't plan to do it again really..
The bike being unfaired and the wind could be a factor for the GS.

I wouldn't worry anyway, use the 2 years on a modest bike to gain experience, plenty of time for speed later Wink

How are you finding the acceleration on yours?

to be fair 110 is about full speed on an un restricted gs500, stands to reason you'll lose a few mph when you slice a 3rd of your power away,

Yeah Nick the wind does get you a bit above 80 Wink I'm looking at getting one of these https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fly-screen-Suzuki-GSX-750-1200-1400-GS-500-E-GN-250-blk-/140493173406?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item20b60bb29e
Smile May help a bit

The acceleration is pretty wicked! Coming off a roundabout in 2nd, pull back the throttle, 3rd, 4th, 5th in about 5 seconds and I'm at 70 Very Happy Really liking it man, what about yours?

hmmmnz- True That Thumbs Up

When you get a big boy bike it'll be very similar except without 3rd, 4th and 5th, and about a 3 seconds.

When I had my zx6r restricted I was told it wouldn't go above 90mph, I rode it myself and it will do 117 before it completely stops accelerating. Obviously zx6r and gs500 are completely different but just try it for yourself. As previously said...How anybody can say it does 92mph is beyond me.

Yeah, i felt like i was going to been blown off the road on the mod 2 lessons going 60 on a 125 with some wind! Now, apart from the buffeting to me, the 500 is well planted Thumbs Up

they put out 47bhp unrestricted, pre 97 ones were 52 bhp.

top speed unrestricted is 115mph, might do 120 with a bit of help from the wind or a hill. Mate of mine had a '96 with a TCP aftermarket fairing and that did 120 indicated

33bhp restricted ones might just do 100, doubt it will do any more though.

On the restriction certificate for the bandit it says 91 :S

Is that inaccurate to as i thought it would be more than that. Hmm. Anyone confirm?

I saw 120 on the clocks of mine, that was with -1 on the front sprocket.

I'm not sure buddy, from what I've been told tonight, they don't get restricted to a speed, it's obviously to bhp. Just try it out yourself, it's what im gonna do Thumbs Up

Oh yeah, I knew that. Just wondered how far 33bhp can go in the form of speed of a bandit. As there is still varying levels of torque from bike to bike!

When I had my 05 plate GS500 restricted. I could get 100-110mph indicated on it down the M4 with a good wind! felt about as safe as hanging off an aeroplane though... Thumbs Up

Acceleration is limited by grip and power / weight ratio.
Top speed is limited by Power / drag ratio.
So a true 33bhp might be capable of 110mph with good aerodynamics, the restriction specifies a max of 33bhp, your's will be below that, but how much depends on who restricted it, how they did so and the condition of the bike when restricted. It also requires you to tuck in. A 110mph bike will only manage 90-95 if you're sat bolt upright on the thing.
