I'd like to register my CB500 as a Honda Melody, I'll save a fortune in tax and insurance.

in 1983 there still would have been loads of 250's kicking about and not too many 125s, i'd imagine it would have been quite common,

b0unt1 tw1ns im afraid you are going to have to go through the whole process like every body else, even if there was a way to register a 200 as a 125, im sure we wouldn't tell you,
you could always move to a country which still have the 250cc learner law

Won't the 125 be over the 14 bhp limit anyway? Might as well just ride the 200.

Buy the 200, take out the engine, fit a 125 engine. Done.

You will need to fit a ktm 125 engine, carb and exhaust etc and restrict it as in standard trim it is not even close to learner legal,

you will then you need to register the change of cc and engine number with the dvla but because you are changing tax class they will need to inspect the bike, the bike will still be shown as a exc200 on the log book because that is it's model it will show capacity as 125cc though.

This will make the bike cost more to insure as it has now been modified and most insurers will probably refuse to insure it point blank or charge a rediculas fee, then if you even have an accident and the bike isn't learner spec you will void your insurance and be done for driving not in accordance with your licence.

So all in all it is not worth it, you might as well buy a 125cc bike that is sold in learner legal trim something like the husqvarna wre125, as far as i know although the ktm 125cc bike are available road legal they are not sold in learner legal spec.

Eh? If you live in the UK, you can ride a 200 at 17 once you've passed your full test.

You're not allowed to legally a ride a EXC125 cc on a 33hp licence, so you're DEFINITELY not allowed to ride on a learner licence either, though you may get away with it.

There's generally not very much difference between the 200 and 125. You can always get a kit to change the 125 to a 200 from KTM.

If you've got the money for this, you've got the money to pass your test too Smile.

Good point G the power to weight ratio would be too much for a 33bhp licence, even if you passed your test on your 17th birthday you couldn't ride it LEGALY.

I have had this kind of conversation with people in the past, they seem to be under the impresion that you can ride any 125cc bike on L plates,

It is kind of like how ALL learner legal bikes can be de-restricted to do a tonne even the 4 stroke one's.

Yes, but these are aftermarket kits. The factory won't sell you a 200c bike registered as a 125cc.

The people with a 70cc moped, have bought a 50 then big bored it without telling the DVLA. You're suggesting doing the same thing, but backwards. Buy the 125 bike then fit the 150/200cc barrel and piston if you must.

All of those started as 125cc or 50cc bikes/scooters and should have had the new capacity declared to the dvla and insurance etc, in the case of 50's they would need to be reclassed as motorcycles not mopeds.

Also those big bore kits are just as illegal to ride on L plates as a ktm 200 enduro competition spec bike, just because some people get away with it that doesn't make it o.k. (strictly speaking a 17yr old could ride a 70cc scooter)

If your going to ignore the law why not just get an r1 or something instead of faffing about with 125's you are going to get just as banned when you get caught and have your bike will get just as crushed/disposed of.

Alternativly stick to your derbi senda Thumbs Up

you just peel the second 0 off then you still got 5cc to play with so you can still derestrict it.

A bit over a litre of liquid metal into the inlets while the engine is running Wink .

To the OP, doing what you want would be very illegal and also pretty obvious to a clued up plod. Probably be eaiser to buy the 125 and get the 200 kit that seems to be available, but that would still be illegal for you to ride (indeed, so would the 125 as standard).

All the best

The 125 and 200 are exactly the same bike out of KTM bar the barrel/piston/stickers pretty much, so there aren't actually many obvious signs.

Bit on the barrel that says 125? Sure can grind that off but that would really up their suspicions.

All the best
