Ok, so i'm not 17 for a fair few months but i do want to get looking at what i might want to get.

I DEFINATELY want:

Arrow Gears
Arrow Sports Bike Shape (like a shape look like an new R1 sort of shape)
Arrow Reliable
Arrow Good for Commuting
Arrow Fast Twisted Evil (well compared to my DNA 50)

So any ideas?

I have been looking at a Yamaha YZF R-125 but they go for £2000+ If i was to get something, i'd want it to be around £1000 and max about £1500

I'm only going to say what I think a lot of other people will do.

Do your test and get a bigger bike.

I think R125's get to about 70, maybe 75. My CG gets to 65. Personally, I hate R125s because they look like they should be really fast but are in fact not much quicker than a CG. They cost a lot more and if you drop an R125 you're going to have to replace fairings whereas an un-faired 125 you won't. Most people say get a 125 to get some experience then do your test, but by the time you're 17 you should have had experience so just skip the 125 stage because you'll get bored very quickly, but not have enough money to do your test if you get a 125. You might be on your 50cc for a bit longer than you'd like while you save up enough money for a bigger bike, but I think it will be worth it. When having lessons to prepare for your test you'll be on a 125 so you will see how long it will take you to get bored.

It depends what you want more:
A bike that looks 'cool' and fast but is actually slow.
Or
A bike that is fast but doesn't look as 'cool' as a sporty 125

(I think sporty 125s look crap due to the obvious lack of a big engine and tiny wheels and exhaust.)

TBH, i'd want something fast but doesn't look as nice as a R125. But saying that, having an R6 would be brilliant! Razz

What CC is the limit if you're 17 but taken your test

No CC limit once you've taken the test, but there is a limit on BHP/kW of 33bhp (25kW) for 2 years. You could theoretically get ANY bike and restrict it to 33bhp, but it begins to get pointless as the bigger bikes get too heavy to accelerate worth a damn with only 33bhp to play with.

Old 400s and modern 600s are a popular choice as they can still pull a fair bit with 33bhp and then take the restrictors out "after two years" (I'd say most people take them out long before their two years are up, but remember in the off chance you get caught by the popo they may shaft you without lubing the tip first. The same goes for not doing your test and riding around on a 30bhp 125 with L-plates.

I was happy enough to keep my restrictors in my 600 for the full 2 years, but it's used mostly for commuting.

From then on, I and the bicycle feelings deeper.

No limit on cc, but BHP is restricted to 33 for 2 years.

It's just a tad over 14bhp for 125's on a CBT, some 125's CAN make 33bhp, but their reliability goes out the window along with the legality of riding it on a cbt.

If I had the choice at 17, I'd get my arse in gear and buy a decent 400-500cc bike and get it to 33bhp for an A2 license. If you get it done now, you wont have to worry about the new tests coming in 2013.

That's just my opinion on what you should do anyway.

Could i not get a ninja 600 and restrict it to 33 bhp then after 2 years de-restrict it?

i got a 125 (as a project for a learning curve)

but if it wasn't for me wanting to learn i would do your test and get the 250 ninja you said .....if your are still sure on grabbing a 125....I'd say the gilera sc 125 (has a DT engine)
or go for the derbi 4 stroke version if your after reliability more

You don't have to ride with restrictors, I did, but they could have easily fallen out.

Even in an accident they weren't checked for.

Def do your test though Thumbs Up

Definitely

The licence you want to go for is an A2 licence, restricted to 33bhp for 2 years. You can restrict any bike to 33bhp, some take it better than others however.

To get an A2 licence this you need CBT, motorcycle theory, Mod 1 (offroad) and mod 2 (on road).

I never had a 50 at 16, but I'm assuming his cbt will carry over and automatically allow him to ride a 125? Or will he need a fresh cbt to learn gears etc?

When you talk to your training school, its usually quickest to go on an intense course, usually over a weekend or 2, they will assess how many days training they think you will need, and book the tests for you. This way you get your licence nice and fast, cool eh? Thumbs Up

No, you wont need to at all, the intense course will stick you on a 125cc learner bike and teach you from scratch everything you need to know. Dont jump on your mate daves 125 with no insurance and get yourself nicked and have points on your licence before you even get the thing!

Right mate i done the same things as you apart from i had a geared 50, soon as you turn 17 you can either jump onto a 125 as your cbt will automatically allow u or take your theroy then modules, theroy isnt something to worry about, its worth if u have a mate to borrow there theroy test computer cd or if not buy one on ebay for about 25 quid brand new, this will help you immencely as it has mocks for both the written and the hazard preception and a section on the high way code to revise on, in the mean time as your revising book your theroy test (bookable online through the dsa), work up to it and then go and take, as soon as you have done this book your modules 1 and 2 with the company of your choice, finish this get your bike, restrict if required and on you go.

I had a fzr400 for my first years restriction which the restrictor washers quickly vanished from and then i got a brand new sv650s which came with a deal at the time for free restricted ecu which also changed itself into full power (they actually gave me it in my hand as i left hahahaahaha) as i got home.

The ninja 250 would be perfect for you though, good lil bike, looks cool and isnt too shabby in the speed department. Good luck with what ever you do but if u do ur tests u wont regret it!!!

Have you not thought about insurance costs? Thinking

I'm sure for a 17 year old, fresh from doing his test, on a sports bike would be a big risk for any insurer to take on, so as a result you'd be looking at quite a hefty premium.

My plan is to buy a geared 125 in October when I'm 17, use that for a bit of practise, do my test and then wait till January (when the insurance for my 50 ends) so I can get my 1 years NC (touch wood) and then buy a 500/600 and restrict it.

I'm the complete opposite. I'm more interested in getting a commuter like the GS, CB, ER e.t.c. Mainly because insurance will be a lot cheaper, more reliable and better mpg.

But good luck with what ever you choose to do. Thumbs Up

Btw, get a few quotes from insurers to get an idea of how much it'll cost you once you've got full license + 1 years NC.

There is no greater feeling than being 17 and riding without L plates. As far as restriction goes, you can get any bike you like. Likelihood is you can even leave it unrestricted and not get caught but if you wanna be cautious, restriction is a piece of piss for any carbed bike. You just need to know the dimensions of restriction washers, make some yourself, bung them in and you're restricted. A2 test is what you want. Valid CBT, Bike theory, Mod 1, Mod 2 and you're done. 2 years later you're license has no restriction Smile

My parents say it sounds like the best solution so YES!!!!!!

Might save up for a Ninja zx6r and restrict it. Or should i not restrict? cus people have said that the washers just vanish or whatever.

How do you think you will afford to buy and insure a zx6r? As well as paying for lessons/test. Do you have a job? It better be a bloody good one.

Don't forget when something breaks on a bigger bike it will cost a lot more than on a 50.
