So, i just bought my ducati 916 sps ,1998, everything is fine, runs like a dream, untill yesterday, when the RIGHT CLIPON HANDLE BAR CLAMP broke, and i cant figure how this can happen ? isn t this supposed to be unbreakable? i mean, if it would ve broken while i was taking a corner, i would have probably died or at least get some serious injuries, since the bike would ve probably fell on me alltogether.

some pics, the piece is the ORIGINAL one, it wasnt changed, or worked on or anything.

i called the previous owner, he didnt change it or verified it, he was totally surprised this happend, he drived this bike at 180 mph , 100 mph in corners, no issues whatsoever.

i m thinking maybe when it was shipped over with the truck to my place, somehow it got stressed or something?

but shouldn t this piece be like crazy strong? why isnt it melted on to the main bar or smt?

are all bikes using this system or only the ducatis?

If by melted you mean welded then no, that isn't a good idea. Clip-ons are meant to be adjustable Wink

Shit happens, get a new one?

Could the the age of it, been dropped in the past and weakened it... anything!

Also it wont do 180, dont be a ped boi stating you can do 200mph because you have acquired the holy powerband fitted by The Norris Wink

Coul,d be any number of things, overtightened, crash damage, casting fault, transportation damage. Id check the bike all over for crash damage TBH.

There are plenty on ebay.

yeah just got a new one, waiting now to arrive from the states, and i was wondering can i fit it myself, or should i go with it to proffesionals? i`m kinda new to motorbikes, had my first one 4 months ago.

since it s the sps version, 180 mph i believe is duable, it has 128 hp/101nm/996cm3

For a start that isn't the original paint scheme so another hint towards a drop/crash

Might not be an SPS either

So he tells you the bike hasn't been dropped, or the clipon tampered with, then lies in your face about how fast it is and how he rides it and you choose to trust him on any word he's said?

Going to need bigger numbers than that to be able to hit 180mph, my hayabusa probably had something approaching 170hp and would struggle to get much over 180mph in real life Thumbs Up

I'm thinking this, quite possible they used a ratchet system and overtightened it down, causing the extra stress and initial crack. By then riding it around it has got worse until the break.

Perhaps it cracked under the duress of doing 180 all the time Wink

Just had a word with a mate of mine who is big into ducati's (owns 6 various) he seems to think the SPS was a single seater from the factory so wouldnt have pillion pegs.

He could be wrong tho i guess.....

Just googled, Most of the SPS models seem to have multi spoke rear wheel, the odd one or 2 have 3 spoke.. such as the OP. Question

Ha ha, what I meant is that although the Hayabusa would happily hit the supposed 186mph speed/rev limiter in 6th, the top speed the people at UKbusas were getting were little over 180mph REAL SPEED not clock speed Wink

Either way 125bhp isnt getting you anywhere near there, clock or otherwise Laughing

125 wont get close... I think the current bike is around that at the wheel, stated 141hp at crank.. and that can just about touch 170... laying flat Laughing

edit : clock speed of course... and most certainly a private road.

On the phone to my mate now, front mudguard should be carbon, infill panels should be carbon, there should be no piliion pegs.

He "thinks" its a standard bike with an sps tail unit on.

OP how much did you pay? Ad is the rear shock Ohlins? There should be a plaque on the top yoke with a number on, what number is it?

Shouldn't be putting 'that' much pressure on the bars anyway if the guy knew what he was doing.

It is more than likely a "916 Bispoto" according to my mate.

Rear subframe should be grey alloy with no pillion pegs. Oh and a 50mm termi system.

...and put that front brake-line back where it belongs.

IIRC The SPS models have a little plaque on the top yolk.

Has the frame been resprayed?
Ducati use matt gold...maybe it's the polish and camera flash that makes it look too gold.

The obvious visual differences are as mentioned the plaque with the number on it and the white number board mono tail
