Rear right indicator seems to have stopped functioning properly. I take the casing off it (the clear bit and the silver bit around the bulb and it works whereas if it put it all back its very temperamental and seems to pick and choose when to work.

The bike is a Derbi cross city 125.

Am I missing something?

Check the connectors, one of them is dodgy, the act of you removing the lens is obviously moving the wiring around causing the circuit to break.

Can I ask what I am checking for, exactly? Am I looking for the connectors to be loose or damaged or...

more than likely they will be bullet connectors, covered with rubber.
but often this rubber bit splits or is just missed out during build.
connectors get wet & corrode, turning them green.
trace the wires back from the indicator, checking for any splits in the wire, right back to where it plugs into the main loom.
pull off the connectors & try it on the other side. (swap them round) if the problem is transferred over to the other side, you have isolated the fault to that indicator, rather than anything else, like the main wiring, relay, switch etc.
then check it over again, carefully. & making sure the connectors are TIGHT.
if you still dont find anything obvious, replace the thing, wont be expensive.

cheers,
GAZ

I'll have a look, i can't have too much of a fiddle due to if they found out they will void my warranty. I have a 2 year warranty you see. Might just whizz it over to blackburn and tell them to have a look see.

more than likely a dodgy bulb or connection at the indicator end, tbh, rather than at the connector end, being new but if its under warranty, i'd not even take it apart.
if a change of bulb doesnt sort it, its up to them to sort under warranty, afaic,
cheers,

I almost guarantee it is a dodgy earth. The outer casing of the bulb needs to be making contact with the frame somehow.

It's not the bulb. The bulb functions as it should (when it chooses to, that is). It must be electrical.

I'll be making a ride over to blackburn friday when I have money for petrol and a bite to eat. Skinted!

Remove the lens, stick the indicator on to flash then start pulling it about until you make it stop flashing, then you've found the fault.

It's probably corrosion of some sort on the bulb or holder, look for a fine white furring on the plated bulb holder. Take out the bulb and look if the contactors are black or green in colour right where they touch the bulb and check the bulb terminals for corrosion too. When you re-fit the bulb, push it into the slot and turn it back and forth a few times. Chances are that just doing this will make it work.

Likely to be a loose or corroded connection.
As mentioned, have the indy switched on, and work your way from the bulb and indy connections checking each connection point until you find the indicator flickering or completely switching off.

If you were local I'd pop round and do it for the price of a beer Wink
