after listing my bike on the net, ive had two very odd replies. both want to buy the bike, but both want to send me cheques for £4000 or £5000 and want me to deduct the cost of the bike then send the rest of the money to someone else or something like that, because apparently both of them are out of the country. sounds like one big con to me, so im warning people on here. what do you guys think?

Hi,

can't you just cash the cheque first?

Shaun.

Huh?

Whats the con. Get the cheque, clear it and the money is yours? But the bike does not go until funds are cleared.

Never accept a cheque as payment for your bike. Ever.

There was a big thing about it in MCN recently. Apparently cheques can be cancelled weeks after you cash them and 'think' that the money is there. It may even show up on your balance etc. Trouble is the scrotes cancel it weeks later leaving you without any money or any bike Confused

Only sell your bike to someone who turns up at your house with the cash.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooo no no no no!

The cheques DO clear, then after runing through the bank system for a month and they work out its a fake it is then take out of your account, you are left bikeless and ripped off.

If you deal with anything other than cash your asking for trouble.

/note to self, learn to type faster.

It is called a 419 scam, ignore them, send them rude emails or string them along then blow them out of the water. There is a whole new sport of scamming the scammers. Some people have even got them to send money! and one enterprising bloke got the Nigerian guy to send a picture of him with his left nipple area painted red.

A guy on BW does a cracking trade in varnished stoats with them. Laughing

419 scam scammer

NOO!!

Don't accept them, Chrisowingtothis.

The cheques will initially clear fine and the money will appear in your account. About a month later the cheques will be found to be fraudilent and you will lose the value of your cheque from your account, your bike, and whatever you paid the bloke.

Hi,

Could you not open an account, bank cheque, wait until it clears, close account then laugh at the scammers.

Did you say both these people are out of the country? If they can screw us without getting caught can't we do the same?

Shaun.

Paypal funds can be removed from your account at their leisure. Sad

Indeed they can - I've had a few payments disappear as a result of "fraud". After kicking up a big fuss I got the money back.

The only secure payment method is cash, as long as it isn't fake!

I don't believe how long it has taken some people to cotton on to this. I mean it has been mentioned in national newspapers, most bike magazines, the television and on plenty of websites yet people are still asking if they're being scammed. Sad

Sorry...

I'm not saying PayPal is always shit, but this site exists for some reason Wink https://www.paypalsucks.com/
There's been a lot of trouble ($4000's worth plus of it) on another forum I go to due to fraudulent (sub 16 year olds) accounts.
I wouldn't use it.

I've never really trusted it to be honest. And the stuff that I saw, and the huge amount of time, farting about with coppers, local law systems, mail people, PayPal themselves! (dodgy Thumbs Down) etc. really put the nail in it for me.
This is of course assuming that you're even able to track the fraudsters, else you're SOL.

Bear in mind that that site is mostly bollocks.

There are people on phones you can talk to, I have several times, e-mails are responded to quickly and efficiently.

The whole "you're not allowed to do a chargeback" thing is crap too, cos I have done it, and had it done to me.

As I said, I'm not saying that PayPal is always shit, but it's definatly got plenty of holes. If someone wants to be an arsehole, they can use them.

If someone wants to be arsehole they can do it in a number of different ways. Never had a single problem with PayPal myself and will continue to use it.

Cash is the best payment method but you do have to be aware and careful for counterfeit notes.

Hi

Cheques can turn out to be fraudulent months after the money has appeared in your account, and at that point the bank will take it back again.

All the best

Surly the bank would be responsible! I would have to argue that I am afraid.

I have let a bike go on a cheque. I phoned the bank, was assured the funds were cleared. I was also assured that there was no way they could recall the money. To then come back in a month and say, sorry, it was a stolen cheque we are taking the money back! I don't think so, no way!

Once the funds are cleared, you can then release the bike. Just check with your bank.
