I've got a pair of hand muffs that came with the SV650 when I bought it. Thought I'd fit them this weekend and in order to do so, I have to remove the 'Handlebar Balancers'.

These are aluminium bungs at the end of the bars with a bolt through the centre. I think the bolt expands another section and this collapses when the bolt is loosened enabling the balancer to be removed. I can remove the clutch side balancer but when try and remove the brake side one, nothing happens. The bolt comes out easily enough but the thing just wont budge. I tried re-inserting the bolt a tiny bit and gripping with pliers to shift it but still nothing.

Any ideas on how I could get this out?

I'd crack it with a mallet. Thumbs Up

Have you tried threading the bolt back in a bit and then tapping it? It could release the expanding locking device. Or the end weight could be corroded into the bar.

Try twisting it by hand.

Most likely corroded inside the bar.
It will most likely be a bit of solid ali bar cut diagonally, hole in the upper end you can see, thread in the bottom you cant, so as you screw up, it pulls bottom bit up the ramp of diagnonal cut.
Most likely M6 or M8 thread...
Get long bolt, screw into the bottom bit, right the way in so you have bolt in all threads to spread load, then tap lighly with hammer to tap the two bits of rod apart accross the ramp.
Then use small drift like thing.... a propper drift would be good Laughing
to tap the outer half a bit further into the bar to dislodge...
then try pulling out again.
Bit of penatrating oil (and WD40 is NOT a penatrating oil, its a 'water disersant!) may be helpful over night.

Thanks for all the pointers. I had tried a few already. It turns out that dropping the bike on its side works wonders for this type of problem!

I stupidly parked the bike on a slope today, missus was pillion and a huge 50ltr topbox (full) on the back too. A gust of wind slapped into the side and I couldn't take the weight so we all went down!

No major damage but I do need a replacement brake lever now as the ball bit at the end snapped off. Anyway, I came to the bike this evening armed with a mallet to see if I could shift the balancer and it came out no fuss using the allen key Smile

Now I've got to figure out how I replace the brake lever without pissing dot4 all over the place!

Simple... get new lever blade.
Undo pivot bolt lock nut.
Unscrew pivot bolt.
DOT 4 is held in by seals on the piston. Piston held in with a circlip behind dust cover, so unless something is donald ducked...
Pull broken blade out.
Push in new one.
Screw in pivot bolt
Lock pivot bolt with nut.
Check brake light switch adjustment
Job done

If it's a Suzuki lever - better start saving, they cost a fortune for some bikes.
