Leave it, if you try and sand it now it will end up worse. Bikes are meant to be ridden so go and enjoy the good weather. Least you won't have to worry if you drop it.
Might be worth keeping your eye on ebay for a replacement though . ____________________ https://www.metacafe.com/watch/1972097/how_to_behave_on_a_forum/ |

It's no worse than the paint job I did on my Virago
Look on the bright side, crappy looking bike is usually less likely to be stolen.. |

I don't suggest it needs a top dollar paint job, but stripping the old decals off and using aerosols wouldn't have killed the OP!

Yes.
media/vapor blast, bit of filler here and there, decent primer (a few layers), decent rattle cans (a few layers) and some lacquer and that'll look pretty damn good. Not like new, but far better than the hammerite-and-a-brush look you're going for now.
In fact, you could get it professionally re-done in a single colour for not much, maybe £120 or so I reckon. Maybe not even that much, I don't know. well glad to see the support for a newbie!
First - the bike only cost £100, it's 24years old and actually NOT in that good a condition as it looks in these pics.
Second - I will be getting the Tank replaced and I expect I will be painting that one too! This bike is one for me to learn and gain experience on - with every aspect of owning a bike.
Third - I had no presumptions that this would turn out either good nor bad, this was the first EVER time of doing it and, as they say, you learn by your mistakes. Next time, I may or may not use spray - again, comes down to experience!
Note to 'TUG' - it is possible to get your point and opinion across without the need to resort your attitude and language to that of a pre-pubescent jackass (and I'm being kind...) ____________________ Oldie - 1987 Suzuki GP100 SOLD!

On a commuter bike, the primary reason for paint is to stop the rust getting hold. That paint job will do that fine. I've brush painted stuff numerous times before. Gets the paint on much thicker and keeps the corrosion at bay. People who worry about pristine paint ride Harleys and the like ____________________ The RXS100: vehicle of choice for Chuck Norris |

Wyldkat,
With all Due..... comments are fair, and you do learn by mistakes.

That was what I had to work with.
That paint job was horendouse, and the mix of paints used had reacted. I nibbed back, re primered and blew over, to get this:
https://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w269/teflons-torque/030_013_BlackDog/DAWG_02.jpg
That was all done with rattle cans, and in total the whole bike was painted for under £50.
Here it is in primer.
https://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w269/teflons-torque/030_013_BlackDog/DAWG_13.jpg
It doesn't take a HUGE amount of skill or money, but it does take some patience.
That paint job lasted looking well enough for five years, and I'm just thinking about doing it 'properly', this time around!
https://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w269/teflons-torque/Little%20Dreams/100_0626.jpg
Snowie's bike, again ALL done with rattle cans. Least the pretty bits. Bit more 'puka', and a bit more expensive. It was down to the metal / plastic, then built up. Probably £100's worth of paint, primer and Laquer on that bike, £25's worth of decals.
https://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w269/teflons-torque/Little%20Dreams/100_0630.jpg
My bike, again done to similar standard, all rattle can work.
Not 'quite' as expensive, I'm not as heavy handed as Snowie when it comes to 'nibbing back'.... I don't take it back to bare metal again! And its not had AS much deep Laquer to bring out the colour as Snowie's fancy over ripe cucumber colour... sorry, 'Dark Aubergine'!
The Decals make a HUGE difference to the final effect, and make it look 'factory' and not obviousely home painted.
On your bike, that Suzuki Badge, should make it nice and easy for you, as it is probably glued on, and with warm water, and an old butter knife, lift off, so you can paint under and then re attach with something like evostick.
The original block flashes on the tank to begin with, look like they were put on the wrong sides.... or the Suzuki badge was put in teh wrong place.... surely it should have been in teh gap between the blocks? anyway, you could, with very little inginuity replicate those blocks, in paint. to make it look 'decaled' without having to hunt down factory decal pack.... BUT, plenty of people make custom decals and sure Corf on here could sort you out for a few beer tokens.... as said, whole Decal pack on the Super Dreams were only £25..... some times its not WHAT you know......
Few ideas, for you for when you find a replacement, or decide to have another crack at it. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

As a rule, brushes are best kept for painting frames, not tanks.
TUG, get back in your box. Wyldkat , be prepared to receive flak like that: we're on the web, and everyone's got something to say, whether you like it or not.
You've got a couple of choices: either sand it down and start over, or claim that you follow the path of the rat. ____________________ '10 SV650SF, '83 GS650GT (it lives!), Questionable DIY dash project, 3D Printer project, Lasercutter project |

Teflon - your bikes look great, nice job.
If it wasn't for the fact that I have restricted space, I probably would have sprayed, and trust me, I wish I had.
Being a Noob, you take alot of advice from others, your peers and people you trust to give 'expert' advice - this is extremely naive but when you have no idea or the confidence to try out anything, mistakes happen.
TUG, sorry for getting pissy. I can take fair comments, I just don't think it's necessary to 'F... this and F... that' to try and get a point across.
I guess I deserve a poke or two for the REALLY crappy paint job - and yes it was Hammerite!!!
Mainly done cos the tank looked pants without it - (looks worse now I know) and had a fair bit of rust to cover.
In all honesty, since doing it, I look at it and think how shit it looks but not sure on how to sort it (if I should, or just get a second hand tank from fleabay)
This is what I get for being naive and listening to my brother in laws advice on a colour scheme!
D'oh! But hey, I'll know next time..... ____________________ Oldie - 1987 Suzuki GP100 SOLD!

a, I am rather pleased with them
Though the 'Not-quite-Black' bike is snowtigeress's, not mine!
and she's a first time Restorer. This time Last year she didn't even know how to change her chain & sprockets.
I have bog all space, and I don't have a garage, they were all sprayed in the kitchen doorway or outside on a fine day!
Starting with something like this:-
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/plastics%20and%20tank/imax0831.jpg
Remidy is pretty easy, if you want to do it properly, simply start by taking tank off, emptying it of fuel and sanding.....when you are down to shiney metal:-
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/plastics%20and%20tank/imag0855.jpg
Chuck some primer at it.
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/plastics%20and%20tank/imag0856.jpg
If you had any dents or blemishes, you fill & skim.
https://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w269/teflons-torque/Little%20Dreams/imag0947.jpg
Then you sand smooth, and use a coat or three of Hi-Build or filler-primer, to 'blend' the skim to the primer, and avoid filler creases in the final paint.
https://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w269/teflons-torque/Little%20Dreams/imag1636.jpg
And with that nibbed back, you can add your primer.
Before actually painting, a paint test can be useful. Here I sprayed an ice cream tub lid with grey primer, I then masked half and sprayed with white primer, then I halved the other way, and sprayed over silver, so I got four quarters, one plain grey prime, one plain white prime, one silver over white, one silver over grey....
https://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w269/teflons-torque/Little%20Dreams/imag1601.jpg
Then I sprayed over in colour coat, in this case Snowie's Dark Aubergine
https://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w269/teflons-torque/Little%20Dreams/imag1602.jpg
And it All looked exactly the same, so was a complete and utter waste of time and paint! Lol
Actually it's not. Depending on the colour, the primer coat can effect the shade you get in final result, partitlarly with more candy colours, and in the case of Snowie'd Dark Purple, the 'depth' of the colour, and a test, masking off strips, you can get a comparison between colour for different numbers of colour coats, to decide how you are going to tackle the finished artifact..... takes some of the mystery and magic out of doing it straight, and marveling at what the finisghed thing looks like, though!
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Decals/100_0567.jpg
So having established that it works with two coats of Colour over plain grey, thats what we did.....
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Decals/100_0591.jpg
Stickered it up....
https://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x349/snowtigeress/Decals/100_0593.jpg
Then Laquered it. And as its a petrol Tank, used PETROL PROOF laquer. This is quite important. Tank right at the beginning had been painted. some one had put a lot of time and effort into nibbing back and preparing it for paint, spent money on primer, colour and laquer.... then after ALL that hard work..... filled it with petrol.... presumeably out of a gerry can they had decanted it into from the tank when they took it of, and COMPLETELY fucked up all thier hard work!
For you.... you probably dont need to be too concerned about filling & skimming, that does take a bit of practice to get right, and it takes a lot of time, and tackling minor dings, often they dont key, or you cause more of a blemish unde rthe paint than leaving them.
What you DO need to do is make sure ALL that horrible Hammerite is off the tank and you are back to metal before you begin.
Hamerite / smoothrite has its own formulation and it reacts with more conventional celulose or enamel paints. Paint under the hamerite is possibly old fasioned enamel, again, if you use modern celulose based paint, you are likely to get a crinkle effect from reaction. Hence for the sake of being sure, worth taking it back to metal.
BUT, three cans, one primer, one colour, one PP Laquer, maybe £20's worth, with enough paint over for your side panels, you could make a MUCH better job of it.
But, credit, you had a go.... this is what its all about, you'll do better next time. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!
