Howdy all. Just wondering what a JAWA is. I have seen many of them in Europe, and a grand total of zero here in Canada. Some of the singles I saw in Czech were pretty damn kool. Any comments appreciated! Cheers, J.F.

Good solid, simple eastern bloc bikes. They may be slow and ugly, but they do the job and can be fixed with a lump hammer. 350's often seen attatched to a sidecar.

I think they were actually a susiduary of Skoda cars at one point.

They can be quite good as a work horse, but best forgotten in my book.

... best avoided IMHO. altho Stinkwheel will disagree, dodgy East European 2 strokes should be left as museum pieces.

They were designed in the late 50s/early 60s when they were at the cutting-edge of two-stroke technology. The bikes you get today are pretty much identical to the old ones, as you might understand, this makes them somewhat dated, underpowered and unreliable by todays standard.

The mass production ideals of the communist era (ie quantity above all else) did not help matters. That said, they are very simple and easy to work on and above all, cheap!

The twinshock trials and speedway bikes that jawa made are a different story, they were (and still are) highly competative. The communist government pushed all their sportsmen to excell, and if they were going to win an ISDT race it would be on their own bikes.

Having said all this, my modern 4-stroke supermoto with a Japanese derived engine is currently in the garage awaiting a big-end seizure being repaired. My jawa 350 ratbike that I paid £250 for ten years ago is still on the road.
