firstly il introduce myself, names graeme hail from stirling, iv always been into my cars mainly jap ones Smile but got a little girl now and the big "family" car and being self employed iv got my own van, so that leaves little money for my wee jap mistress.
iv been toying with the idea of getting a bike for a while now, always liked the thought of having one, although im now 29 and never been on a bike in my life Shocked .
iv read through about what tests and stuff i need to do etc, still need to take most of it in.
My question really is (a typical scotsman one Laughing ) is about money, start to finish all the tests etc how much roughly do you think it will cost? not including the bike etc. iv had a full driving licence since i was about 18 so i know the road so the theory part should be pretty much no bother just learning the bike i imagine will take a bit of time.

Just starting out myself mate, this is what I've found -

CBT - £100-£130 depending on where you take it, and if you need to hire a bike for the day
Theory - £31 (includes hazard perception)
Module 1 test - £15.50
Module 2 test - £75 (£88.50 at weekends or bank holidays)

Lessons - if needed in between, depends on who you book with I think. Going to cost me £85 for 2 hours doing my DAS, its £75 for 2 hours on a 125cc, so will depend on how many I need to get up to scratch.

So costing me at least £251.50 for CBT and tests, assuming I pass each first time, plus extra for lessons, and buying gear.

These guys in Stirling (no idea if they are any good, they just popped up first on google) will do a DAS course for between £285 and £685 depending on how much training you need.

The DAS will give you a full bike licence.

Alternatively for between £258 and £458 (+£120 for a CBT) they'll get you an A2 licence. (You'll restricted to a 33bhp bike for two years, after which you can ride anything)

The prices look to be about the going rate.

Have a look around your local area and see if anyone's cheaper Smile

125cc bikes are at a premium price due to learners not having any other options, so a CBT and a decent 125 will often be more expensive than a DAS and a decent commuter 500cc.

Imo, get your cbt done, this will tell you if you are going to enjoy riding bikes or not.

Then if you enjoy it take your theory, then go and do a full DAS course, don't mess about with 125's and L plates. Just get stuck in and you will have your full licence within a few weeks.

I did exactly the same thing, except I was 24 (I hadn't ever even sat on a motorbike before).

Don't let anybody convince you to take the A2 licence (tests taken on a 125cc), you will be restricted to 33bhp for 2 years and you will regret it as soon as you realise how dull a big bike restricted to 33bhp is.

Then once you have your full licence go and buy any thing that takes your fancy, i personally opted for a cbr600f sport as my first bike, have had several sport bikes since and dont regret a thing.

Enjoy bud Thumbs Up
