How much would you want a maid to do for YOU? The price doesn't change, just what you'd feel uncomfortable with.
Everything... Cook me dinners, buy and prepare fruit, arrange the fridge, wash everything up, put your clothes away in your cupboard, arrange your stuff, do your shopping, washing, ironing

So, my new apartment is shared with an American friend of mine, who works a lot of hours. So, wants a maid.

It's only $25 p/person p/month, so no real monetary issue. And when working, they never see her. So not a big issue that she gets under foot (I, however, don't have day work for a while, so she's getting on my pecs).

However, even when I do work in the day, I will be locking my room and sorting my own stuff out. If I get the ensuite room, especially. She will just be my clothes washing/ironing woman.

Everyone thinks I'm odd for this mindset, and I am the only brit in a group of Canadians/Yanks... So, I was just seeing if it was a British thing...

I should also point out the current one doesn't speak a word of English, and thinks we are all fluent in Vietnamese.

From September 2014 to January/February 2015 I will not be using any English, nor reading any. As such, I won't be on here. PM at will, but I won't be checking/posting unless in emergencies. Certainly not for the first couple of months. Please berate me savagely if I break that rule...

Whenever I go abroad, the towel/cleaning lady sees my meat cigar (shower or walking around naked etc etc).

I hate having a cleaner, normally leave a do not disturb sign on the door constantly as I would rather have dirty towels than some bint snoopping around my stuff.

Got to agree with you on this: Maids are ten a penny over here as well, apparently the locals see it as some sort of status symbol, the maids are treated like slaves.

No, couldn’t have one in the house, the only Brits I know who employ one, as a cleaner, end up cleaning the house, so it’s not too scruffy for her, WTF!

If you’d like to know how the expat, middle classes treat these people have a read of this, obviously not Cyprus, but I imagine it’s the same the world over.

Jesus wept. I knew Dubai was bad but that was mind-blowing. All the vile evil of humanity consensed into one disgusting shithole.

Have you seen the ad for Dubai that plays before every trailer at the movie-review site (IDMP or something)? My god, I feel the blood pulse in my temples.

I had a maid once when I was in a shared flat. Her duties were the usual cleaning, vacuuming and dusting of the house, doing whatever dishes were in the sink and doing the washing/ironing. Personally I hate cleaning a house, could never be bothered when I got in from work and didn't want to spend my 2 days off a week doing chores.

I didn't mind it personally, it was nice coming home and finding the place smelling fresh and finding all my dirty laundry cleaned, fresh and pressed in my wardrobe. Plus it stopped any arguments between me and my flat mate over who's turn it was to clean the kitchen.

The only downside was when I was at home when she came round. It's very annoying having someone moving stuff around the place whilst you're trying to sleep in your boxers on the sofa, but she was a good laugh so it wasn't too bad.

EDIT: Not sure I'd be comfortable having a maid buy my food/cook meals etc.

No haven't seen that, but my satellite TV comes via the UAE and Saudi, (got it for the footy), the adverts on there have to be seen to be believed!
Mainly it’s US fast food, US cars, and skin whitening cream, Rolling Eyes , quite an eye opener when you cotton on that other than the oil, which they pay outsiders to extract from the ground, they produce absolutely nothing.
For sheer sycophancy, there's a particular ad where a little girl is drawing a picture, when she's finished, she picks it up and kisses it. Guess what it's a picture of the "King" of Saudi, arghhhhh, makes me want to vomit every time.

Was watching something about India - there home-help is very common for your average middle class people. Some surprise was shown that similar people in England (earning a lot higher salaries in absolute terms) wouldn't even have a maid.

That article was incredible. i feel ill just reading it. Some of my best friends are part of the Expat community there, they are incredibly rich. Reading that article, however, i can't help but realise that their wealth is built on the blood of those who have been tricked into slavery. it is indentured labour, something that i thought we'd seen the end of years ago.

There was a undercover series on Dubai a few years ago, they followed the Indian migrant workers to and from their digs to work each day. They are trapped in the system, and can barely afford to get out, so end up just sending money home to their families.

The problem is, that their families would have spent life savings sending their men to Dubai to work in the first place, and so to go back with their tail between their legs just cannot be done...so they are forced through shame purposes to stay and work.

It's absolutely terrible what atrocities humans do to one another.

Christ. That's an eye-opener.

That said, when I was doing some cruise ship work, the laundry wallahs (quite literally!) would steward for the western officers as a bit of money earner on the side. I didn't have the heart to cut the chap who did for the previous guy's pay simply because I wasn't as lazy as the chap I was depping for. I think he got the better end of the deal when I halved the amount of times he should come in (seriously, I'm quite happy to sleep in the same sheets for more than a night!), but ended up paying him the same...

I've no problem with domestic staff, provided they're paid a fair wage and treated with respect. I do think ex-pats in poorer countries, when they're earning orders of magnitude more than the locals (and this is a general thing rather than aimed at the OP!) should pay something above and beyond, not necessarily to the staff, then at least to some sort of social fund or community necessity (clinic, school, whatever).

I have a friend who does this, he has a cleaner come in once a week, he pays her what he thinks is fair for the hours.
Unfortunately, well off expats, being well of expats do not like this and my mate gets a lot of stick for paying, what is, in effect, four times the going rate.

Wow, there I was wanting just some back up on 'I don't want strange women waking me up in the morning or messing with my underwear/hiding my stuff'...

... Then we had to go all deep about Dubai. I shall remember this article, as plenty of people I meet keep harping on about it like it's the promised land. Bah. 3 years in prison for eating a poppy-seed bagel before flight... fuck you Dubai.

Of course if you point out these minor issues to a white liberal in Britain they go into denial mode and call you a racist. They are also the ones that say "racists" don't know about other people's cultures... quite ironic really!

In any case, I refuse to go to Islamic countries due to their laws Smile

55% of Indians defecate outside (pissing and sh!tting). Feel free to check youtube. Also, you might want to avoid the Ganges sewer, err I mean "river".
