Front brake bandit.

Hi everyone, as a new guy on here I thought that I would introduce myself as this is my first post. So .... Hello !

Anyway quick question as I have my DAS booked for the end of the month, been riding a 125 for over a year now and on my assessment with the test centre before booking the assessor called me a "front brake bandit" referring to my overuse and reliance on my front brake through habit with the 125.

Just wondered if any of you guys had any things to look out for on the DAS or how to re-educate myself in the ways of the back brake. I'm just so used to using the front on the YBR I rarely even use the back one, but am well aware that when I move up to a bigger bike I'm going to end up on the pavement pretty damn quickly if I don't.

When I did my DAS they scared me off the front brake too. The result was I tried using the back brake too much and crashed!! Friends who had been riding years couldn't belive somebody would advise you not to use the front brake. Now I do 99% of braking with the front (or the engine) and ride a lot better!

Call him an 'ars bandit' for his troubles if he prefers the rear!

I'm the same with the front brake, it's far easier for me to change the disc pads on the front then it is to change the drum on the rear, i only use the rear for emergencies or wet weather.

5 minutes before your Mod 1, your instructor will take you up the back alley and whisper in your ear "All that stuff I told you about using the rear? Forget it for the emergency stop, just put your foot on the brake so it looks like you're using it. That way you can't lock it up and get an instant fail."

He may look sheepish while he says this, but I wouldn't bet on it.

I remember when I did my CBT a while ago one of the instructors said about the weight shift from braking would engage the back brake as long as I was covering it and have always used that on my 125 so I think I'll stick with that.

Also, be progressive with the front brake... Pull it on smoothly (rather than just yanking as hard as you can to jab it on), and you'll feel when it starts to lock up. Useful, as that's a good time to stop pulling harder
