Its a big fat Yay for my CBT, which I took on Monday the 9th of May, it was quite a trial by fire, as I'd never ridden a motorbike in my entire life, or even sat on one for that matter - but also, the day was really windy and full on monsoon rains! I'm on the Wirral coast, so the wind coming in off of the irish sea was staggering!

But anyways, the day went well, and I got my certificate, initially I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped, but toward the end of the 2-hour road ride, I was starting to ride more autonomously and enjoy the experience. I suppose like anything new, when you use all your brain power just to do it, you don't have any time to think about if you're enjoying it or not!

What I can say for first timers, is that the actual "riding" is easy enough, if a little jerky when you first start out, but its the safety, the lifesavers, the look left/right/left/right/left/over-shoulder that really puts the pressure on the brain - that said though, once I got more used to the bike, I was able to concentrate on the safety and ride a little more easily, even though it was in the miserable rain, in Monday afternoon traffic in Birkenhead, I did start to get a grin on Very Happy

Now the question, do I stick with a 125 for a while, or go straight into DAS? Hmmm...

I would stick with a 125 for now to get not only experience of riding a bike but also road experience if you have never driven. Also get out on it as much as you can.

I've been driving for 18 years Smile Just never been "riding", so I have my road sense thankfully Smile But I think you're probably spot on. What I'll probably do is take the DAS and get it done with, then stay with a 125 for a while for the sake of cheap insurance, petrol etc until I have some no-claims, and some more bike experience!

well done, mate - you sound like you're in exactly in the same position as me!

I enjoyed doing my CBT, but felt nerves and having so much to think about took the shine off a bit (I did mine in December, so the weather played a part as well!)

Since then, I've had a couple more lessons, one on a 125 and one trying out a 500, and all I can say is keep going (whichever route you choose), it's bloody amazing!!

Congrats again Clapping

Thanks bud, you've hit the nail on the head, its just having so much to think about does take the shine off a little. The instructor said he thinks I'm ready to go straight into DAS and be done with it, I go to collect my certificate on friday (had none left!) and can book my first set of "upgrade" lessons then, which are on a 650 of some kind.

I think I'll do that, the 125 felt very manageable and stable enough (was a Derbi Cross City 125) so I suspect it'd be a good experience to try out a 650 and see how I feel about it. I sat on it when we got back to the shop after CBT, and even though its only say 30-40kg heavier, it felt like an entirely different animal.

Full marks to you doing yours in December! Brave!
