i got my licence back today, after being done for speeding over a month ago, and sending my licence away over 4 weeks ago

it arrived back today, photocard identical, and the paper counterpart, was the same, apart from one line of details written in the space....provided

now, and im dead serious here, why couldnt i pay my fine in cash at the police station, and have them write the line of text on my licence while i wait, thus ending a long papertrail?

instead i had to write two albeit brief letters, 1 cheque, 2 envelopes, 2 stamps and 2 trips to a post box, plus a trip to a police station

this seems utterly ridiculous to me, if the police can send my licence off for me, why cant they take the cash, and send that off for me, and better still why cant they write the fine crap on, so i can actually have my licence back, and not have to live without it for over 4 weeks

ridiculous Evil or Very Mad

Did you got banned, if so how long was it for?

Normally if it's a short ban, the court will stamp your license and hand it back to you.

I agree it is a long winded process, but that's the public service for you.

Count yourself lucky, my friend had to send his license away to get his six points added to it and they somehow managed to "lose" it. Cost him £17 to get a new one and will cost him again to get the points removed.

it was only 3 points, not a ban

i'd be tempted to refuse to surrender my licence next time, as it imposes too much of an inconvenience

if there is a next time Rolling Eyes

Your lucky dad got his back after about six weeks and it was in about 4 pieces. He only has an old paper one which was very old (27years!), but it came back with something unreadable written on the back and it was split along 2 fold lines.

I know where you're coming from on this. When i got banned i had to hand over mine in court,to get it back a month later with the ban info hand written on. Why couldn't they just write it on there and then and hand it back to me? It makes no sense Confused

Sorry but i don't mean to sound crass here but lets face it if you had not got caught speeding you would not have been put through all that inconvenience Rolling Eyes Surely the whole idea of punishment is to inconvenience the perpetrator? Or to put it another way if some little scroat nicked your bike and the authorities went out of their way to make life easy for him how would that look? Would it deter him?
I know that there is not much comparison there but we are all the same, if you don't want to get dicked around by the authorities don't give them reason to. I am guilty of pushing the speed limits a little too and if i got caught? Well lets face it if we got caught every time we went over the limit none of us would have licences Wink Sorry Goose normally i agree with most of your posts but this time........ Very Happy

You don't have to pay for a duplicate. Just ring them and say it didn't arrive and you need it soon Thumbs Up They'll pop another copy in the post.

Of course I would never do such a thing...
