Extreme my be a bit of an overstatement, more eactly i mean extreme road conditions, like ice, heavy snow flooding...

I'd imagine it would be a lighter bike? like a trials? but then being higher up, would it make you more prone to toppleing over?

through flooded areas i guess anything with spark plugs or electrics low down are going to be pritty useless, and the exhaust...

What do you all think?

What experiances have you had of the WORST weather you have experianced on your bike or perivious ones you have owned?

Say if you HAD to ride 20miles through snow, ice, wind and flooding what would you want to be sat on (and no a car is cheating, as is a trike Razz )

The worst ive ridden in was snow on the buxton/macclesfield road, it was pritty damn scarey and i managed not to drop the bike even though it was pritty loaded up with gear too (i did manage it the other day on flat ground for the first time in nearly a year of ownership Rolling Eyes) i'f i'd had a passenger i would have took the 30 odd mile detour, it was an experiance but i won't be rushing up there at the first sign of snowflakes...

I would say something like a 125 4-stroke trail bike like a xlr125. My mate thrashed one through a motocross track for a year in wheel deep puddles before the thing seized, so its definitely durable.

also being 4-stroke it will be slow revving so easier to control in the snow and ice.

oh and its a honda so won't break down, and being a traille it won't get damaged in crashes.

I'd make sure i was on a decent 4 stroke enduro, probably with semi knobbly tyres. They'll get through anything, and the bikes run for ever. Only bad thing about it, your quite high up and when your high, it hurts when you fall. Laughing

One of those would do perfect!

I'd love an africa twin (i'm looking into geting one at the end of uni) another paris dakar fave.

Either that OR am going to get a spare bike, this will be for when the cx is off the road/being serviced, for really nasty weather and for arseing about greenlaneing Very Happy thing is it needs to be cheep...

Theres a free vid with ride i think, its got footage of the paris dakar, jumping MASSIVE dunes and slaming right into the ground, then geting up brushing themselfs off and rideing off again muttering expleteives.... ace! Thumbs Up Twisted Evil

I dont think i'd dare take a scooter out in the rain let alone the snow Very Happy at least you dont have far to fall...

Actually the other worst conditions ive ridden in were at leeds festival, looooads of dust and really bad roads, amazeing fun on my cg125, i felt sorry for the ninja, cbr and fireblade owners there Razz (untill i got to the nsl roads again).

Rode about two hundred miles to get my TL1000R home after I bought it, back in January when it was very cold, lots of snow, ice and other crappy weather around to have fun. Got home and had to defrost a bit before I could manage to type easily. Laughing

Best bike for shit weather is probably something along the lines of a motocross bike, but no bike is good on snow and ice due to the nature of how snow and ice have no grip, and how unstable you are when on two wheels. It's not like a car when if you don't grip you just slide a little, you'll just fall over unless it's a small slide or a slide when up right and going forwards. So crap weather conditions you're best to not be on any type of bike, use the car instead or take the bus. Or call in sick to work. Thumbs Up

Hmmm tough one.. I think a scooter would be good for snow and stuff, light, easy to chuck about and easy to hold up if your sliding about.. easy to pick up if/when you drop it etc...

Personally I will no doubt find out this winter... WR400 + whatever the weird British weather can throw at me.. should be fun..

I know most big 4 stroke enduros are fine in water.. I've taken my WR through a deep ford a bit too fast which create one hell of a wave right over my fooking head - got drenched, so did the bike - but it still ran perfectly.. so they can handle water..

Ice well maybe not on the road tyres but stick a set of wets on Thumbs Up

Everything else it'll be fine with..

So all in all the best bike for winter riding has to be a nice light racey supermoto/trail bike IMO.. things like the BMW and Africa Twin etc are wayyy too big and un-manageable - It wouldn't be my choice anyway.

Definatly dirt bike, failing that something with a strong engine, good weather protection, ABS etc

BMW's are good all weather bikes. If its good enough for plod to do hundreds of thousands of miles on throughout the year then its good enough for the rest of us to ride in all weather!

still, in ice and snow, snowmobile gets my vote Laughing

I'd agree with the BMW F650 to be honest. That or a KTM perhaps.

I have no pictures but I took a GPZ500s through a worse ford than that, accompanied by a guy on a Morini 3 1/2 on our way to a bothy in Wales. Map ref: SN 842 774 as if anyone is interested. Had to keep the throttle high and slip the clutch to stop water running into the zorst (which was under water). Another mate took an SV650 through it the following year (I was on my supermot at that point though.

I have ridden my jawa in white-out conditions, about 8" of snow with up to 3' drifts. Only real problem was snow building up on the HT leads and causing misfires. Cured by making a deflector out of a margarine tub lid.

Best bike for ALL conditions is a Dnepr 18. Two wheel drive outfit, stick this and you won't even get a landrover in to tow you out, find a tractor! (shaft drive crosses over to power the sidecar wheel on a rigid axle -no differential, constant drive)

Grandfather once went into a ford at 30mph expecting it to be shallow, he was wrong! Razz

Bike snapped to a hault halfway through, he had to get someone with a car to tow him out. The engine sucked in water and snapped the crank trying to compress it Laughing

Fords: the cheap way for lazy bastards to clean their bike.
