micro car and the b1 a classing of license

i have had a look at the other post on here about the micro car and just need some advise as my mate has just passed his "D.A.S." test on tuesday and is looking at buying one of these cars

He has rung up the car company "microcar" and they have said yes you can drive it on his class A, myself im leaning in the way of no he cant as i recall back in the 90's the dvla changed the system so that anything with 3 or more wheels needed a car license "B1 or B". looking at the website for the micro it does say that you can drive it or it seems to word it that way (down at the bottem of the page)[/url]https://www.micro-car.co.uk/mgo.php[/url]. Am i right or wrong here or does it look like micro car are selling cars to people that wont be able to drive them legally.

any info would be gretfully recived so i can let my mate know and stop him wasting his money on one

certain small cfars are narrow enough to be classed as quad bikes (a certain width, not sure exactly) and therefore can be riddin on a bike license. so i'd say he probably can.

Prior to October 2000 passing your motorcycle test gave you both A and B1 categories on your licence. After then you only get A category.

A category - motorcycle ( if 3 wheels, max weight 410kg unladen )

B1 category - light quadricycle ( 3 or 4 wheels, max weight 550kg unladen)

So, simple answer, He cant drive a micro car/smart car/reliant or quad unless he passes his car test

he cant he needed to pass before febuary 2001 to get the right licence

i was looking into it when my daughter was born as a way of getting her about

and you cant ride quads on a road with a bike licence either

You were right to be sceptical about the bike licence law, Further reading in there website I found this bit of information.

This EU directive permits full motor cycle licence holders, pre 2002,and car licence holders to drive Microcar in the UK.

Therefor if your mate didn't pass his test before 2002 he is not qualified to drive.

If his card part of his license says B1 on the bottom he can drive it on the road!

None of this pass before 200X bullshit because the DVLA admitted a long time ago their automatic update system didn't always work as it should, so you could have passed a bike test but not automatically been given the B1.

If he has B1 or B written as a full category on the card part, he can drive it.
If it is not there he can't.

How do people not understand this?

I have had one of these and driven it on a bike licence for the past 4 years.

I now have a Microcar 2009 Mgo and before had a Microcar MC2

Can't drive yours at 16 on a moped license though

I agree mind - no child of mine would be stuck in a featherweight 28mph car at the mercy of other road users.
