I'm in the process of putting a new plug in, but I've noticed a slight problem.

I took the old plug out and the end that the cap goes over looks like this.
https://img534.imageshack.us/img534/3885/20090417212411.th.jpg

And the screw (pic) bit that goes on it, is inside the spark plug cap.

The new plug has the screw bit on it (pic).

So should the screw be taken off the plug when putting a new one in, or does it need to be left on?
And is the screw meant to be inside the cap? If not how do I go about taking it out?

Thanks

you don't need this bit it should be screwed on the the end of the spark plug

the new spark plugs you shouldn't be able to remove the top part, just put the plug in and the lead will fit on top

Push the used spark plug into the cap and turn it clockwise a few turns, this should re-attach the nut affair back onto the plug and then extract the plug from the cap and both items should come out together.

Just tried this and it doesn't seem to want to screw onto it.

Any other ideas?

not too sure what your problem is here.

that top bit screws on and off. you can tell whether or not you need it because your HT lead will or wont go on.

unless your talking about the screw part falling inside the plug? id just buy a new plug. if its broken then chances are its not going to be a good electrical connection anymore. its only a few quid for a lot less messing around.

Is the screw on bit actually in the cap? The bikes I have don't require the screw on bit and therefore must be taken off and thrown away

Hmm........that trick usually works, could be that the thread in the alloy 'nut' is NBG and too sloppy to screw on to the plug's thread. It looks like you'll be keeping yourself pretty busy experimenting with 'probes' to extract it or buying a new plug cap could be the answer. Ozzy's response might be the easiest and cheapest way out providing the cap is securely held when pushed onto the new plug. Best of luck.

Yes the screw bit is actually inside the cap.

It might be that it's suppose to be there, I can't say for sure.

I've tried pulling it out with needle nose pliers and no luck, so im guessing it's meant to be there.

It still sparks ok, so it's not too much of a problem.
Just needed to know whether or not the screw should be taken out or not.

Thanks for the replies Thumbs Up

Your confusing yourself here. You took the old plug out that didn't have the screw on bit, well thats how it should be. The new spark plug will require the screw on bit to be removed before fitting and thrown away.

My suzuki is also like this. The bit inside the cap is very likely and at 98% I belive is part of the spark plug cap! Its not a threaded part.

So:-

1. old one out
2. new spark plug screw on bit removed
3. fit new plug
4. done! Thumbs Up

I don't recall any japanese bike I've ever owned using the screw on terminals.

This thread is lacking in the word "nipple", IE spark plug nipple. Wink

Agree with Rocket, I thought this the first time I removed my plug.
The cap has what looks like the screw bit inside - this does not come out so don't try to remove it (although a new cap don't cost much)

The cap 'snaps' or 'clicks' over the plug - the bit inside, that looks like the small screw-on piece, is the conductor

The small screw on bit is thrown away - pretty useless thing really but there you go

the only exceptions to engines that do keep the "nipple" are cars, generators, lanwmowers etc.
