Took the NSR out for a blast tonight as i've just finished running it in, it's running excellently and I'm looking forward to a good ride.

Join the M5 at junction 21 for the trip up to the twisties. Once I get up to motorway speed something doesn't feel right and I glance at the temp guage which is rising rather quickly from normal Evil or Very Mad Pull onto the hard shoulder and let it cool down, start back up and get another mile up the road and the same happens. Finally managed to get off the motorway after around 3 hops and discover that I can ride at 40 mph without it overheating.

Can't go back on the motorway so have to ride the twisties at 40 and stop a couple of times to let it cool down. Pulling up to a set of traffic lights the bike cuts out, push it to the side of the road and a biker comes up to the lights, he gives me the nod to which I reply with a Thumbs Down and he drives straight past....

Then I remembered I hadn't fuelled up so flicked to reserve and off I went, bloody thing ran out of fuel 3.5 miles away from home on a dark, unlit stretch of the A370!! Phoned Mrs who didn't want to come out as daughter in bed.....and didn't want to wake her brother up to come and help. There's nowhere to store the bike due to proximity to a travelling fraternity site and I got no money.

Start the longest walk of my life, the only saving grace is the NSR isn't too heavy. 2 hours later and I arrive home, soaking with sweat and bearly able to walk. The Mrs then asks...Are you OK?, I can't print my reply.

Serious Karma to the guy on the blue YBR who stopped and the 2 bikers who were in their own cars. Thanks for the offers of help if your on here but I was merely a mile from home at that point.

To all the 100's of cagers who didn't stop and especially the ones who tooted, I hope you burn in hell Twisted Evil

Having just done a full top end rebuild on my NSR 125 I now face the dilemma of how to run it in. Most people seem to agree that 2 strokes need a 'hard' run in to seal the rings in properly but it just seems a bit alien to me. Because the NSR runs roller bearings and has a plated cylinder opinion is that they need very little break in.

I've never run a 2 stroke in before, well apart from scoots that were WOT from day 1 and never gave any probs so i would appriciate some input as to what your experiences are with both methods.

My plan was to run it at idle on the stand till it got up to temp to check for leaks etc then take it out and do 6 2nd gear runs up to redline then releasing the throttle and letting the engine coast back down. Apparently this will seal the rings properly Confused

you did 500 careful miles on your brand new top end in 3 days? either that or you did exactly what everyone told you not to do ad thrashed it. up the motorway no less. ( high speed. long duration) and its going wrong?

What piston did you use?

And were you holding it at constant throttle for a good while? (2Ts are known not to like this).

Thats basically how it happened but couldn't write that for fear of a shoulder spy! Made me feel loved Wink

I did actually listen to peoples opinions, I have been on leave for the last 4 days or so and have just been out on the bike every evening plugging in the miles Maybe this caused the lack of love from the Mrs). It was boring as shi*t but had to be done. I varied the speed as much as possible on the m/way and it's only a trip of a few miles anyway.

That was my concern Ingah, couldn't afford a Honda kit and barrel and as i'm selling the bike i just put a Ebay 54 mm top end kit in and a new small end bearing. Also had to swap the powervalve cables round as the previous numpy had put them on back to front. Seems ok and the bike is going like a rocket (for a 125) so I think it's a problem with the cooling system / Ebay head gasket. With no tools and in the dark it's difficult to diagnose even with the fairings off.

I feel the pain Wilson, just looking at my blisters from 3.5 miles in Gearne Dry Techs Evil or Very Mad

Ah ok then in that case my kmx did similar. Have a look round the top of the barrel / head there may be a small bolt or screw that appears to just be screwed in (i.e. Not holding anything on) if there is take off the radiator cap and Then the bolt /
screw. Put back in when water starts coming out Thumbs Up

Ha ha ha at your wife, she was probably pissed off that she had to stay home and babysit whilst you were out having a laugh. I'd have done exactly the same given the situation!!! Laughing Thumbs Up

I'm sure the exercise did you lots of good. Karma

I can't disagree with any of that Very Happy She did feel guilty this morning but I love her to bits and couldn't really be pissy with her!

There's no bleed screw on the NSR apart from the one on the waterpump which I do up when coolant is flowing through it. I ran the bike for 10 - 15 mins with the rad cap off to hopefully get rid of any air that was left when I did the rebuild.

I've come to the conclusion that when I cheaped out on an ebay head gasket I made a big mistake. Didn't compare it to the old one and i've read some reviews that some are badly made and block the coolant return pipes.....that sounds spookily like my problem.

With regards to the op about car drivers, it's never nice to find out what a low form of life you are considered to be simply because of your transport choices. As a general rule they are all this type of cnut. Not long after i started riding i came off my RXS in an icy unlit country lane one night. I broke two fingers and gave my knee a good clump. When i got up to retrieve the bike from the road the front end had shifted round so the handlebars and front wheel were facing different directions. Whilst i was picking up a wrong shaped bike with a limp and only one hand one of Hampshire's lovely drivers pulled-up and had to stop as it was a narrow lane. Much as i didn't expect him to help it would've been nice, certainly nicer than what he did do which was beep the horn at me. When i'd shifted the bike out of the road he simply drove off, happy to leave a visibly injured girlie with a seemingly fucked bike in a deserted lane on her own. It's an eye-opener but a good one. If you're on two-wheels these are the cnuts you are sharing the roads with.

This is why I'm quite happy to kick bits off their cages, when the circumstances require such action.

I've had a deep seated distrust of people who drive cars and ride bikes since the word go. Some of the worst arseholes I know for cutting up bikes etc while driving also ride bikes themselves.

I have to drive a car whenever we go out as a family, I'm quite happy to lose out to a bike who can filter etc Thumbs Up

Problem with modern society is that people have turned into selfish mo fo's who are only bothered about their own little journey and sod everyone else......not that I would expect somebody to put themselves out for my stupidity but 3 people hopefully earned themselves some good Karma

Wow there is like a petrol station every half a mile at least around my end, be hard to have problems not getting anywhere to fill up. But there are some annoying cages around, saw a lamborghini gallardo earlier almost knocked a cg learner over that was just minding his own business.
