Hi there,

I own a suzuki a50, when I was riding it the other day it felt as if the chain or something in that region had come loose and when I revd it the motor and chain would not engage. So I pulled over, and tried starting it in 1st but it died instantly as it felt like it had a huge amount of resistance (like something was jammed), and then i tried to start in second and it just revd with no engagement. What's wrong and how do I fix it?

Cheers

Nick

Sounds like it could be a problem with the gearchange mechanism. I suffered almost identical symptoms on something years ago (GP100, I think it was). Turned out the bolt holding the little wheel on an arm thingy that engages with the end of the selector drum had come loose, so it was almost impossible to change gear and when you finally could it would jump out of gear again.

Could be a clutch issue, maybe something simple such as cable needing adjustment...but it does sound a bit more serious than that.

To be fair there isn't a lot in your description to work on. At a best guess there is something wrong with the clutch or gearbox.

Have you looked to see if the front sprocket has come loose?

Are the chain and sprockets in good condition?

Its a 40 year old bike, how long have you owned it and what's the history?

I haven't taken it apart to have a look at yet. I'm not to sure what to look for to be honest. I got it a couple of weeks ago from a guy who restores vintage bikes. It can change through all the gears, but like i say when I try take off in second it just revs as if its in neutral.

What should I look for when I take it apart?

Don't take it apart until you've exhausted all other possibilities for this problem. Have you spoken to the guy you got the bike from?

I'm in new zealand so I doubt I am local, thanks any way though. I cannot find a manual on the net for any a50. Does anyone know where I could get my hands on one?

Also, when it is rolled in neutral a sound comes from the engine as if there is a barrel being rolled with stones in it. I'm guessing something is broken in there? But what?

The input and help is much appreciated guys.

Is this an A50P?

Been a while but from what i remember.

I would say as a random guess the clutch basket may have broken up, take off kick start, carb cover, carb and right hand engine casing and you might find a few lumps fall out, if it's the basket broken up it'll be best, failing that you could be looking at an expensive gearbox issue.

Good place to look to start with anyway

I've got it sorted now thanks. Turns out a tooth had broken on one of the sprockets and jammed the chain up.

Does anyone know what torque I need to tighten the rear axle bolt up to when I adjust the chain? I can't find anywhere that says the specs for this. Cheers
