I agree with G, if you are flush enough to spend 20k on a car, rather than one that can do everything fairly well, get 2 that can do the opposite things of fun and comfort, without much compromise.
As for what vehicles to spend it on, I wont pretend I know, but I like the idea of a lotus elise or a vx220, and something comfy for longer trips.
If sir would like to spend all of his budget on one car, how about a nice aston martin db7 ? comfy, and a bit sporty, with a prestige badge

I'm willfully ignoring that by 'new', you may have meant brand new, as to me, its just plain stupid to buy a brand new car. ____________________ colin1 is officially faster than god |

Might I recommend a BMW X5 instead? £20k would buy you a nice diesel model, or a 4.8iS which is an amazing car. |
I'll have a look, thanks. My MD actually had a new one as a company car and has changed it for the old shape!

I thought of a TVR and the Tuscan, the reliability issues are putting me off though.

I don't really do many long trips in all honesty which is why fuel economy etc doesn't matter that much. I'd love an Aston but hate the DB7
Edit: I completely agree with you ref buying new.

Thanks for your valuable input. My insurance on my current car is up for renual mid June, that's why I'm changing.

If what Hetzer says about you is true then maybe a van with blacked out windows would be more suitable than a car |
I've got one for special for special occassions already.
| G wrote: | E60 M5?
Not far off the price of a E92 M3 - I suspect an excellent 'do it all' car.
However, I'd be tempted by say £7k on a kit car and £13k on a speedy barge. |
A bit "old man" I'm afraid imo. I might try the E92 and see how it compares to the E46.

Seriously though, you've not given us enough information to recommend anything.
What do you want out of the car?
- Big engine
- Small light "driving" car
- Hot hatch
- Luxury car
|
That's because I'm open to anything really. Not very helpful I know. Practicality isn't an issue, I want it to be good looking and have a "presence" if that makes sense.
Thanks.

A 2nd hand A5?
Lotus Carlton
tbh, a £20k budget gets into some really nice 2nd hand car price areas. |

A bit showy?
How about a 911? Push the budget a tad and you've got a 996 version turbo which should be pretty fast and look a bit more flamboyant.
Definitely be tempted by a good spec well looked after Cerbera. Or maybe a cheaper one and start saving for an LS7 for when it goes pop .
More sporty - Noble M12. More GT - Masserati 4200. |

Decided I don't really want a saloon, it's something I suppose!
Like A5s, I'll have a look.
Lotus Carltons are very cool but wouldn't suit me

I'd probably end up with a 350/370Z. |
I've had roadsters but like the Z4 out of the list. Got an M3 at the mo. Like the Focus RS. Not so sure on the nissans myself.
Good suggestions

It's a bit too much to insure a 911 really, I'd love a 997.
Really like the noble, going to have a look at insurance!
Thanks everyone. |

Im not sure why, but if i was in the market for a 20k car, id kinda aviod run-of-the-mill cars like the M3, Imprezas and suchlike.
Great to drive they may be, but they just wouldnt make me feel 'special', like id want for 20k.
I like the Idea of a TVR cebera, and for around 10k, you can get a pretty decent one, keep the other 10k for repairs .
Or if you can stretch, a BMW M6 you can get for around 22k, now that is special, V10.
If i end up moving to the states in a couple years, i plan on getting the Camero. ____________________ Ducati 1299 Panigale

If I had 20k to spend on a car I reckon I'd be in the Cerb camp.
Buy one for around 10-15k and save the rest for the maintainence. ____________________ My Flickr |
