Im 6ft and have a pretty small waist but as well as that I have insanely long monkey arms and a 36" inseam.
Does anyone know of any brands that have leathers cut specifically for tall slender women? Ive tried on so many different brands and nothing fits right, everythings always too short in the body and the arms.
Even buying XS mens stuff is no good because the chest and waist are always way too big.
Any advice on brands to look at would be appreciated! |
Sorry... no... sensible answer block.... THIS comes to mind, and the keyboard is too full of drool, to think straight!

OWCH!
Sorry for that technical hitch..... but our technicians have been working very hard to sort it... and thanks to a prcission blow to the ribs with a munkey wrench by my other half, Snowie.... all seems sorted!
Yeah.... motorcycle gear is awkward.... and particularly so for women, I'm afraid. But it IS getting a lot better. Twenty years ago you would have been padding out mens leathers with thick jumpers, or being pointed at tassled jackets & tie sides.
My auntie, would appear to have a similar physique to yours, and we had a bike accessory shop, and conciousely sought out ladies bike wear, and she struggled finding stuff to fit her....... well... off the peg... she kept nicking my one piece, tailor made for ME, best fit she found!
THAT is the 'ultimate' solution, going for custom made to measure leather... and its NOT as expensive as you may fear, though it by FAR isn't 'cheap'.
Meanwhile... more practically..... see other threads on choosing bike gear.
I give long lectures on teh topic, and and remark on how disheartening it was, giving the 'saferty wear' talk in CBT lessons, explaining safety wear, and how to choose it, and a third of teh students are sat there pleased as punch in thier 'My First Motorcycle Outfit'.... thinking they have done really well... only to have the bubble of all the salesman's hype burst.....
Salient points;
Crash Protection is only worth ANYTHING if you crash........ it does NOT make you 'Safe'. Risk of crashing is as high whether you are in full leathers or a bikini...... only effects how much it gonna hurt when everything else has failed.
Leather is BRILLIANT for abrasion resistance.... but on the road, tend not to slide down it very far, very often before we hit something hard and unyeliding.... great on a race track, but advantages some what tempered by the road enviroment.
Armour is useful, for impact when you DO hit that hard and unyeilding thing, BUT, poorly fitting or in the wrong place, or the wrong shape, or simply unlucky, it can do more harm than good, and its 'effectiveness' is actually only over a very small range of scenarios'. In a low speed slide, halps not at all, in a mega impact, makes no difference.
Conclusion.... DO NOT put TOO much store in 'protective wear'.
A LITTLE well considered safety gear, of a decent quality, in the right places is FAR more useful than a whole 'My First Motorcycle Outifit' that is quantity over quality, and ill fitting, and sold on enthusiasm and fear, rather than experience and wisdom.
Get good and well fitting hat first and foremost.
Good comfortable gloves that you can grip a golfball and feel the dimples through...... this time of year you shouldn't need REALLY think warm gloves, training, mastering clutch and throttle control, FEEL is most important to you, along with comfort.
Footwear..... possible to find 'something' suitable and sensible under your bed..... leather, stiff, and past the ankle..... that's ALL thats really necessary.
Good heavy denim trousers, (OK, Jeans!) not 'ideal' but for comfort and practicality and a 'bit' of protection, a good base.
Jacket, the traditional, BLJ (Black Leather Jacket) still tends to be a good 'standard' and offer enough 'useful' protection, for sensible money.
Getting more specialised, for a first time outfit, I'd NOT look at leathers, but at textiles..... especially in the 'budget' price ranges.
Man-Made fibres, tend to be cheaper than leather, and more of teh garment cost goes into design and construction. They tend to offer a fair amount of useful protection, with comfort, convenience and waterproofness, for reasonable money.
TWO PIECE... you are more able to select trousers and jacket to better fit.... but yup, us skinny, neatherthal proportioned people will ALWAYS stufggle, off the peg.
I'm 40.... and rather proud of the fact that I still fit the made to measure one piece I had made wen I was 21.....
Snowie was muttering about her new 'water proof' being a bit 'long' and told me to put it on.... she's 5'5" and it was a 'small'.... actually went accross my shoulders, but as soon as I put my arms into a riding crouch.... the cuffs were up my elbows!
I HAVE in years of riding, got USED to cold wrists! Apart from when in my race suit!
Its just 'one of those things', I'm afraid! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

thanks for the replies
teflon-mike - in my mind im like xena, but not quite in real life! thank you for your advice, i have got myself a great fitting 4star sharp rated helmet and now im just looking for the rest of my stuff. thank you for putting the crash protection into perspective for me, its made me think about things differently and i really appreciate your help a lot. youve given me a lot of great advice that i will definitely be referring back to often
louise - ive never heard of arlen ness, but i will be investigating in a minute. i tried a couple of dainese jackets and they are proper small, like the sleeves looked 3/4 length and the body was just too short. my bf has a dainese jacket and he told me to avoid because he "looks like a dick" in it since he has the tall/long arms issue too. i will have a look at some alpinestars jackets though, thank you
bluerredman/hyaon - naw i think ill pass on that if you dont mind
clanger - i was thinking about doing this, it seems like its going to be the easiest thing to buy dude stuff and get it altered to fit me perfectly, seems like i havent got much chance otherwise! |

Im heading over to their shop next week to try on some two-piece leathers, they seem to sell stuff in ladies sizes rather than mens waist sizes. Buying ladies leathers seems to be a bit of a mission in general so I'll let you know if they are any good. ____________________ Theory test - 19/8/09, CBT - 11/10/09, MOD 1 - 16/8/10, MOD 2 - 27/10/10
