 |
|
Hello members, I am just wondering if we can add another one of the 12volts boxes to my grandsons CG bike and add a car battery in the carrying box on the back.
The reason behind this is that he races radio controlled cars that require recharging on site as they only run for around 20mins at any one time.
Thank You. ____________________ https://www.chattinbubbles.co.uk/

Hi
Possible (assuming a later 12V cg), but a battery is heavy and will upset the handling if in a conventional top box high up and behind the rear wheel. Also not sure whether you expect the CG engine running to charge the battery, but compared to that required to charge a car battery (ie, presume what is needed to charge rc cars) in a reasonable time it is tiny.
All the best

A car battery is about 60Ah, which is 10 times the capacity of a 125 battery. The CG's charge current would be around an Amp absolute max (Any idea what the Reg/Rec is rated at Rob?). Even if you could divert all this to charging the Car battery and not keeping CG battery in topped up and good condition, as well as driving the CDI, Coil, lights, indicators etc, AND assuming you could charge at a constant current at 100% efficiency, it would take around 60 hours to charge the car battery (reality says multply that by 1.4 to 1.5). In petrol that would cost a fortune.
Carrying a car battery on a 125 is one thing, charging is completely impractical.
As an aside, what size and capacity packs is he charging that he's caning a car battery to empty?
A few years ago I used to go electric flying carrying a 17AH battery I scrounged, and 3x 7 cell 700mAH packs fully charged from home, and recharge the last used pack while he current one was taking me into the clouds. The big battery lasted me all day. Go Speed 400 soaring and crappy low capacity packs of yesteryear. ____________________ Prize cunt

The CG's electrical system has a single 4A fuse, I believe....
Sort of gives you an idea of the max load the entire system will handle.... ie about the tricke charge rate on a car battery....
It would take something like eight hours running the bike flat out, to charge a full size car battery.
However.
I used to race RC10's.
We used a car battery, and simply lugged it around in a plastic box.
It would normally charge the RC car batteries to keep a couple of cars running for an afternoon, and more than enough for the fleet of Sunday morning races, especially if you have three fully charged packs before you set off.
Make of mine has a C90, he used to carry a car battery on the luggage rack, to charge his RC's off, becouse that bike's 6v.
It was fun watching him wheelie it accross the rugby pitch..... it didn't do a lot for 'balence'.
Give the CG is 12v, TBH it probably has enough beef to charge the RC batteries on Paddock Charger, off it's own battery, if you set a fast idle, without having to add a big accumulator to the rack.... I'd give it a go and see.
Given the age of CG means it's kickstary, wont really hurt too much if the battery is flattened a bit, it wont need much juice to start it up again, doing it on a kicker. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Don't overload your lad's bike with a heavy battery placed high and to the rear. Buy him some spare RC batteries and have them charged and ready to go. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'
