Just bought myself a new NSR (well new to me anyway!) and it had no L plates on it, so my question is, I have stuck an adhesive L plate to the inside of the screen but as it is tinted and dark it's hard to see it clearly. If stopped by the police could I still be given 3 points even though it is there and visible though harder to see and make out?

In short, yes.

The plates have to be clearly displayed. Whether or not you would get stopped for it is another matter....

I'm pretty sure this would be illegal, although it all depends on the ociffer in question.

AFAIK, the colours are part of the requirements.

why run the risk? just clean the screen properly and then use some decent tape to stick it down, i used insulation tape on my old nsr around all four sides and never had an issue with it coming off, it didn't sit perfectly flat but hey ho it was better than picking up 3 points for it then being left one speeding ticket away from losing your licence if you've just got your licence (if you've got your full car licence then ignore this bit but the needlessly putting yourself forward for points bit still applies)

It will be illegal yes, and it's not worth getting three points on your provisional license for. Bear in mind, it's 6 points and you lose it. Just stick it to the outside of the screen and you're golden. That's what I've done with mine.

L Plate + Clear tape = Secure, prominent and LEGAL L Plate.

Thanks everyone, thought it would be best to ask before I get pulled by a copper who's had a bad day. Guess I'll put it on the outside to be safe.

Hey,

That is not true.

To 'lose' your Provisional licence, you'd have to accrue 12 points.

The above is true because you are not subject to the "New Drivers Act" until you have passed an official DSA test. That means once you have passed, you are only allowed six points in two years from your initial pass date.

Not that you should get any points at all on a provisional, but you can get accrue 12 on a provisional licence.

HTH! Thumbs Up!

I was considering it from my own perspective, since I've just passed my driving test, also. I'm assuming if I got 6 points, I'd lose both my driving license and my provisional bike.

Either way, it's not worth getting any points on your license, just do things by the book.

Hey,

That's a bit of a tricky one.

If you were to accrue six points, you would lose your motorcycle entitlement and your provisional entitlement. However, you can just regain your provisional entitlement by buying a new provisional licence so you really never 'lose' it, you only lose the entitlement you gained the points on that tipped you 'over the edge' in terms of points.

For example, if you had already accrued 3 points on a motorcycle, but got another 3 points in your car, as far as I understand it you only lose your car entitlement.

However, as you have said, I'm not sure on the 'by the book' (Wink) but not getting any points at all is a pretty decent aim for a new driver of any entitlement.

Cheers!

No such thing as losing just one entitlement!

So, for arguement sake, say you got a licence with A2 and B-B1 entitlement; that allows you to ride an up to 33bhp bike and a car.
Like someone said... 6 points in the first 2 years and you will lose your licence... meaning back to learner... it does not matter which vehicle you accrued the point.

Not only that but the points do not magically disappear from your licence, they will be there for 3 years, and you can only apply to have them removed after 4 years!

Going back to the OP with the L plate on the inside front screen... when i was a learner i had a smoked screen on my bike and i had the L plate on the inside with double side sticky tape... never had a problem!

Hey,

My mistake, I wasn't quite there when typing that.

When you do lose your licence via the New Drivers Act, you have to re-take a theory + test etc for one entitlement (the one you were driving when you accrued the points that put you at >=6) and once that is done you regain all your old entitlements automatically.

However, they can say you have to retake the tests for the other entitlement too, it's at the commissioner's prerogative.

Cheers!

I am not sure about that... as the direct.gov website is not very clear...
Actually scratch that... just read the actual Act and subsequent offenders regs...
On re-testing after you pass you SHOULD be getting all the entitlement back... but that's the theory.
Anyway Thumbs Up
