Hey guys, today I've been on a nice journey and I managed to come back with an MTX 125! Very Happy It has 21,500k on the clock, DEP exhaust and that's round about it, needs tinkering to get it running correctly as at the moment it's running like a bag of spuds and just doesn't feel right.

It's had a light bump on one side as the gear & foot peg seems to be bent and plastics are terrible condition at the moment, took it up the street and it put the BIGGEST smile on my face! Laughing Left me thinking why have I had a scooter for long?

Going to be my first real long term bike and I think it's going to definitely be a journey to get me ready for my restricted test. Thumbs Up

Just wondering if anyone knows where's best for parts such as top end etc? Any help would be appreciated!

I had one of these and sold one at christmas and regret doing so now Sad

For parts your best off looking at eBay. Get a haynes manual for it asap!

First things i woul recomend is an oil change, check battery / maybe a new one, clean the air filter out, new spark plug and some mini indicators.

Mine was dropped and crashed and hit by a car going in reverse but survived it all Smile

Oil the speedo cable and check the bearings for any play in the wheels and suspension too.

your chain looks super slack and i would gues the rear brake is setup like crap too. Adjust both but check the condition of the sprockets too.

Have fun with it, i know i will be wanting one again in the future Smile

No doubt the previous owner was a wreck (chav) as well.

I'd be quite surprised if that has passed an MOT.

Agree with that! I'd hope not more than £200 with a bit of T&T!!

But hey, that's what 125s are for, time to spend a bit of time and money getting it in good mechanical shape!

also your chain tensioners are near the end of their limits!

You want a new chaim it seems atleast so you can bring the chain tensions down to about level 15 or so... depends on your weight n such too but haynes manual sorts that out in more detail Smile

Well thank you for the cheery replies! Thumbs Up

It's a bike that really interested me and I thought it'd be something I thought about after and wished I'd of tried! The previous owner didn't do much with it, his friend used it as a commuter and since he sold it, it's unfortunately been sat in someones garden with the odd blat up the street.

It's not in the best shape I'll admit but it's a starting point! Hopefully should be cracking on with the mechanical side of things then look at new panels with an original color scheme in mind.

Apologies for posting up a crap bike, but I thought it was a bike non the less . Laughing

Err.... it looks like half of my bikes before I started with them... we all have to start some where.... in this case a new chain, sprokets and chain tensioners, are probably the next thing.... though for some reason the ruddy great crack in the right hand side panel, and the badly painted plastics just had me obscessing over how to 'tackle them'.... getting that old paint off, shouldn't be a problem.... but doing it so it doesn't ruin the plastic beneath would be.... painting over wouldn't be an option, as it would simply crack and peel as that has when the plastics flex.... stripping back and repainting would possibly work, but need to choose paint and primer carefully to get a 'key' and avoid flex crazing or cracking! Oh Dilemahs!
Try and reclaim or get patern replacements!
Mean while that CRACK in teh RH side panel... its teasing me...
I don't think I could have that outside and not be wanting to pull it off and try stitching it up with the soldering iron!
In SHORT.......
looks like MY kind of 'fun'..... welcome to the wondefuly masochistic world of 'project' bikes.... and the even MORE perverse one of picking the rarer and generally more awkward two stroke Honda.... AND as a 'rolling' renovation! Laughing

Well Teflon I do like a challenge! Laughing Chain, sprocket & tensioners will be on order ASAP! That crack in the right hand side.. Well, the whole things an eye sore but if I'm quite honest it does do my head in!

Going to try and get it running nicely then worry about how it looks, it may be a nail especially compared to most on here but it's a bike that excites me and it'll come out smelling of roses. Wink

Laughing Dont be too hard on it..... might break! Laughing
My DT's not much better, probably worse in places.

And you have your priorities in the right place..... solid mechanics first, pretty bits last.
Might look a heap, because of that tatty plastic.... just means it's been well used... there are, an AWFUL lot of very shiney 'nails' around, and plenty of people that believe a full ground up restoration, is taking the plastic bits and tank off and chucking a bit of paint at stuff.....

Start with the brakes, next do the suspension, then the steering.... rest will follow.....

And have fun!

Thanks for the reply Teflon nice to see someone on here sees its potential! Wink And that DT is definitely my kind of thing!

Exhaust needs welding so that's coming off and being done, new sprocket, chain etc should all be ordered at the end of the week along with a new battery as this ones shot just had new Castrol oil put in it so just waiting on bits and bobs now.

Definitely the mechanical side of it comes first, to be honest I couldn't really give a toss how it looks right now as long as I get it running well... I'm riding it, not looking at it! Laughing

Cheers fiveus, needs a lot of fettling but it'll get there. Thumbs Up

I think these are ace bikes. Bullet proof engine in a solid frame. So long as your forks are straight, there's not much can go wrong. Love the DEP pipe, that takes me back years.....

Once your chain's squared away, and you've run a couple cans of white from halfords over it, you'll have a cracking little work horse. I've always had a soft spot for MB's & MT's......Best of luck with it.

Agree with the last few posts, nice little project Thumbs Up

A bit harsh of people to call it a crap piece.

OP if you don't mind telling, how much did it set you back?

Cheers guys Thumbs Up I've actually found somewhere that sells a complete panel set, brand new so may look into taking it back to it's original colors.

Nice to know that they've got good engines in them! The frame needs welding but once that's done it seems pretty sound, just a really old bike and not had the best owners ever.

As for price, I swapped it for my old bike. Was very clean and tidy but this just feels so much better to be on and great fun! Laughing

Looks like a good project. Hope you have fun with it.

When you say its running like a bag of spuds - what do you mean ? Lack of power? Does the engine sound ok - any rattling or knocking ? Does it idle ok?

Great little 125 project mate! Yes it's a tatty looking bike cosmetically, but with plenty of time, patience and a few £££ spent on it, then it will easily become a brilliant and cracking fun bike to ride, and they are wicked little trail bikes too!

Stick with it and all the best with getting it sorted out, it will be worth it to end up with a brilliant 125 2stroke!
