Did you stop after the line or keep going? I was told once by a traffic cop that they look at your speed and use it to judge whether you intended to stop. Certainly, I've over-shot red lights twice and stopped with a double-flash but heard nothing afterwards. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

That's not a red-light camera. They are grey boxes on posts about 8-10 metres before the lights. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Hmmm...now you mention it, there is a speed camera sort of thing just before some traffic lights near me, so that explains it.
I thought the boxes on top were sensors, but then you said about these 'cameras' and I just assumed.
I feel really stupid now. |

Hey,
I wasn't aware so many people lived in caves! !
Red light cameras look almost exactly like speed cameras and they point at the traffic lights they cover. In fact I know of a few in Bristol that also function as speed cameras.
If you go over the white line when the light is red a little piezoelectric sensor in the ground triggers the camera to take two pictures which show if you stop or not.
The picture that Stinger posted is not a red light camera, it is a sensor that some traffic light systems use to determine if there are cars waiting.
They look like this (some are grey some are yellow they can be various colours):
https://nottspeed.com/CMS_content/items/britems/Siteprofiles/redlight/sitephotos/Hucknall%20Rd%20Hadyn%20Rd.jpg.
As above, not all junctions have them on and from my experience very few do, but it's best to keep an eye out.
If you do hear something about it, you'll likely be hit with a FPN (Fixed Penalty Notice) which is 3 points and a £60 fine if you accept that, otherwise you can refuse the FPN and take it to court, not really a good idea though as the picture proves you have committed an absolute offence.
You can accrue 12 points on your provisional licence however if you do get 3 points from this and then pass your motorcycle/car test and get another 3 points before those 3 expire, you get punted back to learner status.
I hope that helps, cheers! ! ____________________ "Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul."
