Hello all,
First of all, I greet all of you on this forum ! It's impressive to see such a tight community.
I have just got my licence, and I want to get a new 125cc scooter. It needs to be less than 2500 British £, be cheap to run and reliable, comfortable and good looking. Having done some research, I found SYM scooters to be a very good deal here in the UK, coming with a 3 year warranty and being pretty cheap.
From their offer, I think the HD 125 Evo is a very good deal, with 13 BHP and only 135 kg of weight. It also has disk brakes at both front and back. My only problem with it is its looks : it looks kind of dull...
Another good scooter I have come across is the Honda PCX 125. It's got fuel injection, stunning looks and start-stop technology for a low consumption. It does however have a smaller tank, less power, only 1 year warranty, and it's a bit expensive.
Which one of these two would you recommend ? Or do you have any other alternatives for me that fit the above-mentioned requirements ?
Thank you for your help ! |

Usual advice: neither.
If you're scootering for economy, don't waste money on a new scooter which will cost you 1/3 of its value the second you turn the key.
If economy isn't a big issue, pass your test and get a 250 or 400 scooter which will be far more capable. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

OK, well, I call things as I see it, and if THAT is your motivation, SORRY but you are fooling yourself from the start... and THAT is a recipe for pain!
Scooters, as in the 'classic' original Vespa was designed by a Motorcycle hating aeronautical engineer... he did not like bikes, he did not like biers, and he hated the idea of having to design one...
I am CONVINCED that he started by thinking, "OK, so how can I pen something SO rediculousely 'DAFT' they will never make it......"
And started by thinking, "AH! Motorbikes, they fall over... big wheels givethem stability.... sooooooo whats the SMALLEST wheels I can find?"
Went on to think that still wasn't stupid enough, sho chopped the frame in half, so it would wobble even more.....
And STILL not happy, he decided to shove the engine at the back, completely ruining the balence... and knowing that reducing unsprung mass made bikes handle better, increased it as MUCH as he could, bolting the engine and gearbox to the rear swing arm.....
STILL not content, designing the anti-christ of all motorcycles... his 'genuis' was to offset the back wheel from the front so they dont even follow the same lrack, and the whole thing 'crabs' at an angle to the road!
In short, he designed just about the most inconcievably WRONG, and most inherently UNSTABLE powered two wheeler, any one has seen fit to put into production and sell to an unsuspecting public!
THEY ARE NOT SAFE!
If you have it in your head that you 'feel' safer on a scooter, for some bizare reason, that you do on a conventional motorbike.....
........you need your head checked!
Which is NOT meant derogitorily... but as a little pun.
Becouse that 'idea' based on a falshood, is going to influence the WHOLE way you aproach riding..... and if you DON'T have that false notion nipped in the bud now, it will lead you on a fools errand into hurt.
Powered two wheelers are inherently dangerouse. FACT.
Statistically, they are the most dangerouse form of motorised transport on British roads. More analysis of the stats and Scooters, significantly aided by the architypal 'Ped-Boi' bump those stats up even higher, making them statistically MORE dangerouse than motorcycles by a VERY long margin... BUT not entirely due to spotty faced pizza delivery kids, the very design of the machine, and those tiny little wheels with fat little tyres on them are the most visible start of a whole HOST of design compromises for style and practicality, sacrificing stability and hence safety over a 'conventional' motorcycle.
Said it a thousand times on here before, there are three layers of protection; Primary protection is recognising 'hazardouse' situations and NOT going there. Secondary Protection is knowing when you are IN a hgazardouse situation and using what 'tools' by way of machine control, balence & hazard avoidance to get yourself OUT of trouble.... Tersiary protection.... is your crashhat, leathers, boots, back protector and all THAT stuff, which dont do a THING to stop you getting into a hazard, nothing to help you get out of a hazard, and merely offers a little bit of 'comfort' from whatever protection it is, in that it wont HURT as much when the inevitable happens....
Idea that scooters, have that bodywork around them, and space for your legs, is TERSIARY protection, and you are sacrificing a heck of a lot of control and balence that MIGHT actually help you avoid an accident for the small comfort it might not hurt as much when you crash......
And, scooters, the little wheels, perverse balence and particularly the automatic gearbox... its not just a SMALL sacrifice, its a HUGE one, and the lack of 'control' the provide you, in my opinion is MORE LIKELY to MAKE you crash, than any amount of bodywork save hurt when you do..... and the stats, SORT of bear that out!
IF you THINK that being on a scooter FEELS safer.... you are WRONG... and if you are letting that emmotive falacy condition your decision making over choosing a bike, you will let that same emmotive falacy condition the decisions you make when RIDING that bike.... and making decisions based on FALSE information, tends to make for VERY bad decisisions, and making EMOTIVE decisions, rather than clear logically reasoned ones even worse.... so you are likely to make the WRONG decisions at the WRONG time, and are EVEN more likely to hurt yourself.
Here and now, on the basis of your current reasoning, doesn't matter HOW safe you FEEL.... buy a scooter, go ride, you will not BE safe, and with impared judgement, incredibly at risk of becoming a statistic.
I don't have much against scooters... though I do think them rather more than a little perverse..... and if you really WANT a scooter, becouse they are easy to ride, with twist and go gearbox, and they look 'cool' or the practicality they offer is useful to you or they merely meet your sense of asthetic... you LIKE scooters....
FINE buy one.......
But PLEASE do NOT go buying one because of any false idea that they are safer than a conventional motorcycle, or that feeling safer they ARE safer, or that safety is how much it hurts when you crash.... SAFE is not crashing in the first place! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

I would like to 'like' the above post, but cannot because I don't have enough karma.
I have just bought a Yamaha YBR125 to learn on for a few months until upgrading to my full license.
I recommend it. |

Also car drivers treat mopeds like shit, a bike will give you a bit more road presence, but whatever you decide why buy new!
So much depreciation!
Put that money towards lessons or something ____________________ 07' Honda Hornet now full powaah! My guide on performing an oil change! |

That bit I agree with....
| bikertomm wrote: | Put that money towards lessons or something |
This bit, I definitely agree with... as far as money should be set aside for it regardless.... loosing the 'L's makes a BIG difference, to road presence, & having attained 'The Standard' lifts you out the major danger zone of learnerdom
| bikertomm wrote: | but whatever you decide why buy new! So much depreciation! |
This... don't agree with...
I'm a miser... I HATE parting with money.. BUT in the case of newbie bikes... the wear and tear and general level of numptyness, neglect abuse and botchery they tend to suffer... how bludy expensive they are for comparatively little bike, of so poor standard, having a BRAND NEW bit of hardware under your bum.... which should do everything it ought to, how it ought to, and not do anything it oughtn't do... just eliminates a variable from the equation.... and lets a new rider concentrate ONLY on learning to ride.... if it wobbles.... its what the riders doing, not becouse 'they all do that' or there's something not right with the bike......
Its just 'nice', and worry free.... the bike works. You aren't worrying about faults, having to ride round quirks, or worried about it breaking down.... and WHEN you are fresh faced and eager, and worrying about EVERY fucking thing, from whether you have done your life savers or left your indicators on to WHAT THAT PILLOCK PLAYING AT! when you are clumping down gears to a junction.... you have ENOUGH to worry about without taking on any EXTRA worries you REALLY don't need.
Depreciation? Horrible stuff, BUT... if you HAVE the money, and can afford it... WHY THE HELL NOT!
Sometimes its WORTH IT!
End of the day, depreciation on a Brand New three grand 125, is like.... well, could write the cost of the whole bike compared to driving a brand new £20K car out the show room! If you loose a grand on the thing in a year... yes, 30% 'hit', but in the greater scheme of things, its small potatoes.... and eliminating anxiety, reducing hassle, and actually having shear 'niceness'.... It really can be worth it. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

The foot position is the thing that gets me about scooters. The riders have their feet almost together! The thought of it makes me shudder. It also partly explains the ped-bois with their feet on the back pegs. |
