By fairing protectors do you mean crash mushrooms that mount onto the fairings, or crash mushrooms which mount to the frame? The ones which mount onto the fairings are really not worth having at all as they do much more damage in the event of a crash as they just rip a chunck out of the fairing.
The ones which mount onto the frame (like R&G ones are very good as they save lots of fairing damage and general damage in the event of a crash. They can transfers the damage to the frame, but in at least 99% of crashes they would save lots of damage and there is only less than 1% of crashes where it would damage the frame. The off chance of a crash happening which is severe enough to knock the crash mushroom enough to bend or otherwise damage the frame is very very unlikely.
