...listen to music in your lid ?

I am bored sometimes whilst riding..well, not bored exactly..just sick of the hmmmmm sound.......

Is listening to ipod acceptable ?
Or will it be too distracting ??

I think not........

I have considered it before but don't bother incase I do get distracted by and don't hear something important like sirens, also don't want to start singing and and up messing up myself and hitting something.

I suppose I would be ok listening to music on my way to and from work but if I was out riding fast for fun or something I wouldn't bother!

Will often listen to music when riding on the motorway, i try to avoid doing it in heavy traffic. I find I can't hear sirens till there up to me anyway as helmet is poor for shielding wind noise.

the 2am journeys to portsmouth get very boring, so yeh i tend to, never noticed any ill effects, you still hear as much road noise, as with ear plugs, so cant see i'd miss a lot

I've always wanted to, but I didn't like the risk of not being able to hear whats happening around me. Especially being as vulnerable as we are on bikes and cars getting ridiculously close. Maybe someday I will try it, but i'd rather not any time soon.

Listening to rather aggressive music might make me a crazy rider! Laughing

I find that using earplugs gets rid of the wind noise quite effectively.

If your lid is very noisy, then I would suggest using earplugs. I have a friend who has ridden bikes earplugless for years and is now as deaf as a post. The best part about earplugs is that they drown out the unwanted high frequency sounds and quieter sounds (such as the engine rattle you thought you heard last week) and they allow you to hear the important stuff such as your exhaust note and sirens, horns etc.

Go for earplugs, the helmet noise would drown out any music anyway. Put it this way: If the music is loud enough to be heard over the wind noise, then it will drown out all of the important stuff and probably be damaging your hearing anyway! Smile

If I am going on a long journey I pop my iPod in my pocket and listen to it.

I find I can still here sirens and other traffic as much as I can when I wear ear plugs, besides you shouldn't always rely on your ears!
Do those rear observations and you'll see things before you hear them Razz.

I know that one must fully concentrate at what they are doing, but when i used to ride my ped, I mostly listened to most Metal (Metallica, Machinehead, Maiden and the like) to get me in a state of awareness as i commuted to college on cold winter mornings. It kinda gets my adrenhilin circulating too. On summer afternoons, it's mostly Blink 182, New Found Glory and The Offsprings to calm and mellow me down after a hard day. Now that i'm on a "real" bike, i guess i have to pay more attention to what's ahead and behind me, so i don't tend to listen to my MD.

I guess i agree with what most of you say, and i know that what i'm doing is potentially hazardous and very distracting, but isn't this the same as listening to music through your radio in your car? TBH, i'd rather hear a blast of double bass ringing in my ear rather than unmelodic and abitrary wind noise. But that's just my opinion.

I rode to uni once with my cd player on to see what it's like.
Unfortunately I'd left an Iron Maiden CD in the player, bad idea.

On the way back I listened to some mellow music and was fine.
Until I took my earphones out and my ears hurt ages after that.

I might consider riding with music if I could find some more comfortable ear plugs.

I tried wearing earphones with my helmet on the other day, it hurt like hell! So haven't tried listening and riding.

My helmet used to be very quiet, but seems as I've worn it more, wind noise prevails.

If I find some comfy headphones I shall try it, already sing if I'm bored - must look a bit of a prat riding past drivers talking to myself!

My Helmet is so tight I struggle to fit earphones into my ears without them falling out when I put my helmet on, so no i don't, can't be bothered with the hassle. Smile

I use a pair of Sony MDR-EX71 in the ear headphones when riding to and from work, I don't listen to music when going for a weekend blast. They fit in the ear like ear plugs (not like normal in the ear headphones), so remove a lot of wind noise and are just as comfortable as ear plugs, they also have 3 sizes of rubber surround so should fit most peoples ears.

They're fairly expensive at £35-45 but they're very comfortable so totally worth it in my opinion.

I personally have no problems hearing sirens and "wrong sounding" engine noises while wearing them but other people might struggle, but then I'm a new rider, only passed 4 months ago so I'm still ultra alert for idiots in cars and things behind me so I normally see any blues long before I hear them anyway...

I do, but only if i'm going a significant distance (like 100miles+) and only in the left side...

If you put your earplug between the cheekpad on your helmet (if you have a gap there, both of mine do) it stops that feeling like a rabid ferret has taken a dislikeing to your ear.

motorway rideing gets reeeeealy boreing so it helps allot (does me anyway). depends what your listeing to though i guess, soad, talica or pantera probably wont help keep you mellow, i stack the pda with mellow tunes before setting off.

WARNING - IF your singing allong you will probably get seen and you will look mad.

Could try only using 1 ear-phone.

Thanks Marjay, for reminding me about ear plugs... They are a must for me now... Thumbs Up

I haven't tried it yet as I'm sure it would distract me and, afterall, I'm a learner.

However, when me and Col go to France on the bike in a couple of weeks I'm going to take a cd player or radio, because I'll be pillion and so it doesn't matter if I'm distracted!

Hi

I have used a personal stereo on a bike. Tended to find it was drowned out by wind noise by about 80mph even on full volume.

I keep meaning to get a set of small ear phones and get them moulded into a new set of ear plugs.

All the best

Keith

I know I've already mentioned them but here's a link https://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews71993.html they fit directly into your ear so you don't need to get them molded into your ear plugs. The sound is superb for mid range headphones as well.

Those earphones are no good for in the lid. They have a hard plastic shell that digs into the outer ear when the lid is on. Also they fall out when you put your lid on.

Try these : https://www.savastore.com/products/product.asp?catalog_name=Savastore&product_id=10274974&pid=45&tid=2

I have tried these once inside my lid, and they are much more comfortable than ear bud type earphones.

Another plus is they stay in your ears. I'm still a bit dubious about listening to music on the bike anyway though...

Erm no they don't, the outer "shell" is rubber and there are 3 different sizes to fit different ears, they fit in the ear like ear plugs, they don't "sit" in the ear like normal ones. As I said not everybody will get on with them but I found them very comfortable I can't stand the normal ones they seriously hurt whether wearing a lid or not

Just the sweet music of my engine is good enough for me.

Sometimes I sing very loudly to myself, and more than once I've scared people at zebra crosings by forgetting that they can hear me and continuing to sing when stopped. Embarassed

Hi

I will have to try some of those ear phones.

I am currently using some custom moulded ear plugs and I would like to get some ear phones moulded into a new set. That way would keep the decent noise protection.

I have fairly small ears which is why I have not got on with normal foam ear plugs.

All the best

Keith

Hmm, I've wondered about this before. The thought of flying along with tunes on really does seem very cool indeed.
What's the laws view of this though?

I can't imagine Plod being too sympathetic to you if you've been offed and you have music blaring in your ears.

I've never worn them, and tend to listen to the terrible sound of my own singing, LOL ... I can't say I'd want to risk NOT hearing something around me just for the sake of a bit of music as you go along.

If you wanna listen to music on your bike, get a Goldwing with speakers Shocked
