You can get done for drink driving, or ''being in charge of a vehicle whilst intoxicated'' or some utter bullshit.

It's a sure way to get a drunk in charge conviction unless you make sure you can prove you haven't got the keys with you.

Not in a car but in a van many times.
You can't sleep very well in most cars and they are bloody cold.

Its understandable,

But a jobsworth copper may arrest you for drink driving (or similar). I'm pretty sure I've read about the trifecta of having the keys, being over the limit and being in your car have resulted in people getting a conviction

It's a shit idea. You'll be uncomfortable and the temptation would be to drive home after a few horrible hours kip. You'll be well over the top and illegal. It takes one hour for every unit of alcohol to leave your body, plus one hour for liver to process it, one pint of Fosters is roughly 2 units. If you had six pints, it would take 13 hours to be out of your system. I wouldn't fancy 13 hours in the boot of my car.

It's up to you at the end of the day and you seem to be disregarding the advice about the drink driving side of it. I haven't slept in my car so I can't tell you if it's ok or not, I have however lost my licence for drink driving and was lucky not to kill myself or anyone else. Avoid the night out or get a cab or public transport, it might seem expensive but the stress, fines, costs, towing of your car and impound fees, increased insurance and at least 9 months off the road will make £40 look like a piss in the ocean.

Drink at home. Cheaper, better surroundings, sleep where you fall over.

Put the keys somewhere safe not on you, IE glovebox or something, that way its pretty impossible for someone to say you're drunk in charge.

Food for thought (thats the expression right?), everyone I've dealt with for drink driving has gone out the night before, got pissed, slept in their car and driven home in the morning, all now banned due to still being over the limit still.

When I was travelling around Australia I slept in my car for a few months, used to just pull up in the evening somewhere quiet have a bbq and a few beers, then leave early in the morning.
It was a saloon car so I just slept in the drivers seat. I actually found it weird sleeping in bed for a while afterwards.

Getting hammered and sleeping in a residential area on the edge of town in the UK is a different matter though, drunk people will be walking past banging on your windows all night and the police will probably nick you.

Maybe see if there is a camp site within walking distance or ask a farmer if they will let you pitch a tent on their land for few quid. My local pub lets people camp in the back garden, but then it is kind of backwards round here Smile

Of course its acceptable.
In fact I dont know anyone that hasnt slept in the car at some point when pissed.

In summer I sleep in fields ... if I get lost taking one of my 'short cuts' home.
usually wake up within sight of the house mind.

It's true, my dad's colleague was a copper and got caught asleep in the back of his car after a drunken argument with his mrs. He lost his job and got prosecuted for it.

Good that you have made other plans, cos it is a shit idea.

As Mr Shand pointed out, it's not just a case of waiting until its light then buggering off (if you do that, you might as well attempt to drive straight away, as there is marginally less chance of being seen in the dark). You have to wait until sober, and on even just a mild night for the average brit, that will probably be well past midday to take you under the limit.

We have all driven/ridden home pissed from parties the next morning, and I doubt i'd risk it again. Ignorance was the only reason back then, felt ok, off we go.

This isnt about whether you can drive acceptably when pissed, loads can, a lot can't. All think they can. My only concern is the zero tolerance licence thing. Bye bye job.

I took the night bus home from Reading a while ago for the first time. Fiver return, and apart from all the pathetic drunk little kiddies being loud and annoying it was quite bearable. Goes to my door also, which certainly helps.

Glad you've made other plans as it isn't the most ideal thing, but there's always worse places to fall asleep...

Alcohol and Vehicles just dont mix Confused
I know of someone who, was at a house party and planed to stay in the house to sleep over.
However he needed a CD from the car.
Que him opening it, getting to his CD player - cop pulls up and he is nicked Thumbs Down Even tho he had no intention to drive.
My mrs and best friend went to Bournmouth last month for a night out, planed to stay in the car... which they did - its a huge risk to take, spesh as one of them had to have the keys on them to get into the car Thumbs Down

My brother and his mate went for a night out in Nottingham, got pissed and kipped in the car.

Car was parked in a locked car park.

The copper said it took them 15 minutes to wake them, ie they must of been "out of it". Cops nicked him for drunk in charge.

Keys were in the glovebox, they took my brother down to the station and left his mate in the car(with keys) ie they had left him in charge also.
A doctor confirmed he would of been under the limit when the car park gates opened and the police admitted they left his mate "In charge" .

He got off with it.

What would happen, if - said cop - noticed you were in the car, drunk/asleep..... with no keys within any distance from the car, could they still do you??
Just curious. . .

I was told you can still be done as you may have the means to acquire the keys at any time. Even if you gave the keys to your mate who then went back to her house, you could get them delivered to you.
