Hello all,

I have been given a chain by a friend of mine for my VTR. I went to buy a link from my local Honda dealer to be told they need to know the manufacturer of the chain as not all links will fit all chains. I was under the impression that as long as they had the same spec (O ring / X Ring, pitch etc) that any link would do. The main problem I have is my mate can't remember what the make of the chain is and has no packaging for it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

James

I've witnessed a rivet link for 525 grade chain not fitting 525 chain made by a different manufacturer. I don't mean it was loose, I mean it wouldn't even connect the chain at all.

Different makes of the same chain type can be slightly different sizes, you really need the right one as the dealer says e.g. https://motorcycleproducts.co.uk/catalogue/chain-split-rivet-links-c-97_278.html

Have you checked the chain with a magnifying glass to see if there's a makers mark on the side plates??
