Would you buy this lid??

Buying or using ANY second hand helmet on the road would be a definate Thumbs Down

The ONLY exception might be if it was for display purposes only
(I currently have a lid with autographs from Kiyonari and Chris Walker - but it's my own lid)

On the contrary, I would buy a second hand helmet to wear. Wouldn't pay that for it though...

If it's as the seller describes, hasn't been used and has not been exposed to the sun then it's probably in better condition than a lot of 12 month old lids!

Indeed - I would buy a second hand helmet, would consider one that old, but the idea would be to save money, not spend loads of it!

Correct me if im wrong but I was under the understanding that a lid has a shelf life of 3 or 4 years and that after that time the stuff inside becomes brittle.

Only if it's used. The shell becomes soft with UV light exposure, and the inner hardens to to sweat and stuff.

Or it could be a myth pedalled by the helmet manufacturers.

I'd hope that if it's Carbon Fibre it has a shelf life significantly longer than 16 years. After all, Boeing are making the fuselage of their new planes entirely from CF.

I reckon it's crap if it's made of carbon,i've got 15 year old carbon fishing rods that have sat probably months in direct sunlight and they ain't gone soft.

Doesn't stop the inner hardening of course. The helmet isn't made of carbon fibre the whole way through.

Hi

Think it depends on the resin used. It is prone to damage long term from sunlight, but any half decent product should be prepared to protect it from that (ie, a decent clear coat). Think it goes brittle though

Also how do you know the carbon doesn't lose a certain amount of strength? I'm not sure fishing rods ever have to be subjected to high speed impact forces...

That's painted, and thus protected a little more from UV light. Also doesn't have an energy absorbing inner that is meant to harden with age. Also I fully expect the fuselage to get inspected after so many airmiles.

Early carbon fibre silencers had a life expectancy closer to 16 months than 16 years.

Also IIRC there are no ECE2205, completely carbon fibre helmets, they are always composited with other materials, such as aramid, fibreglass etc. Even the £2000 Arai RX7 RC is a composite construction.

Its also a completely different carbon fibre.

My racing helmet, which is an Arai GP6-RC is completely carbon in construction, in terms of the shell anyway.

Surely it's not going to be the Carbon that ages but the resin that holds it all in place, whether it's a plastic resin or epoxy. If your resin goes brittle it doesn't matter how well the carbon stands up.
