I had my Thundercat out yesterday for a good run, on the way home i was overtaking a line of cars in second gear and got the engine speed up to around 12,500rpm before pulling back in and changing up.
The bike has now developed, what is best described as, a metallic scraping noise. The noise only appears at 5.5k+ rpm under light acceleration and gets worse as the revs rise above this point.
If i pull in the clutch, the noise stops and I get nothing but the usual road noise and engine idle. If i work the revs under 5.5k I dont get it at all.
Currently my list of candidates is
1. Exhaust has a hole or is fractured somehow.
2. Chain/Sprockets need adjusted or replaced (chain is slightly looser than spec), I dont think its this as it should be taught under light acceleration.
3. Engines gonna die.
The real problem is, the noise cant be reproduced by revving the engine at a standstill - it has to be out on the road with the above conditions.
Immediate actions look like
1. Oil change to see if we have shiny bits in (lets hope not as a new engines gonna be £££).
2. Adjust chain and replace Sprox/Chain.
3. Check the exhaust for holes and get the welder out for the 4th time
Any ideas to add into the mix? ____________________ Gone: Haotian HT125-8 / Yamaha YZF 600R Thundercat / Kawasaki ZX9R C2

Cam chain tensioner?
Very common on 90's hondas not sure about the Tcat though.
Basically the cam chain tensioner is a ratchet like mechanism that keeps the cam chain tight. If it goes loose then it rattles around making a metallic chain being dragged over a frying pan like noise.
On my CBR6f the noise came in at 5.5k, especially loud when coming down to 5.5k. If it is a CCT then it just needs replacing, cleaning or adjusting depending on the CCT design in the Tcat.
Looking at a pic of the Tcat cylinder head it seems the cam chain goes down the middle of the 4 cylinders, if you want to find it look for something like this on the engine at the back middle:

If it was a honda I'd bet my left bollock on it, as it isn't I'll only bet some of my ballsack hair it is the CCT.

Now that you mention it, I do recall something of the likes on yzf600.com with the cam chain tensioner rattling.
Do you know if its something that needs replaced asap or can the bike with live it until say, payday?
Thats a good call, thanks matey ____________________ Gone: Haotian HT125-8 / Yamaha YZF 600R Thundercat / Kawasaki ZX9R C2

No idea with the Tcat tbh.
On the CBR there is a divided opinion as to what causes the rattle.
Some say the chain is rattling, others say the tip of the tensioner is rattling. If it is the chain then the rattling means it is loose which could be disastrous (could slip on the cam sprockets screwing up your timing, means pistons could hit valves and the engine could die), if it is the tensioner itself then it is not really a problem.
My bros Kwak had a cam chain noise, took out the cct, cleaned it and it went away. My new CCT has developed the noise too; having taken the old one apart I don't really see how they fail, seems like a pin in the end gets rattly rather than losing tension and the noise being the chain (in the CBR mind). In my instance I am waiting until I can be bothered to do it as I'll check my valve clearances at the same time and that can take a while.
If it was me, I'd leave it until payday but clearly the decision is your own and should probably be followed up with some Tcat specific research.
If access is half decent it is an easy job to clean or replace it btw, a honda CCT is about £60. |
