... Interesting title Rolling Eyes Laughing Laughing

Riding home from papworth hospital today (After dropping the fiance off for major surgery Sad Sad), the bike started loosing power.

Next thing I know all power disappeared, I don't know if it locked the wheel up or not as I almost instantly yanked the clutch in (Instinct I guess)

When it finally stopped at side of the A14 (in the pissing rain Laughing) I started her up again. Straight away it sounded absolutely horrible, constantly "banging" like metal on metal. I switched engine off and got her recovered to my house...

Now with my partner in surgery etc Im not going to have time to look at the bike for a few days but hoped some insight might be given on here in the mean time...

My GUESS is something like running lean, heat seized and now released?

Plenty of oil, perhaps oil channels blocked?

Sounds like my old gn250. Going down the motorway steady 65 (id been thrashing it an hour before so had it was unreal) adn all of a sudden, back wheel locked for a split second, then freed up but the engine had no power, was acting more like a brake, pulled up and piston wouldnt budge hor 10 mins, eventually got her started nd she sounded rattly as hell from the piston and top end... Dangerously rattly. Flogged her off after

do NOT run it again at the moment.

Take the plug out and stick a wee drop of 2t oil down the plug hole, and fill the sump up with your normal oil.

That was my bike in the video, that was the engine seizing up on the top end.

If you stick the 2t oil down, and lightly screw the plug in - not too far, just to cover it, and leave it overnight, it should free the piston up.

Definately sounds like it's ran low on oil for too long and it's starting to seize.

This is just my opinion through my experience, it may or may not be what i think it is, but better safe than sorry eh.

Cheers for all the replies.

My partner is still in hospital at the moment so obviously my priorities don't really include the bike at the minuite.

So I will try the 2T idea etc, but im still curious, I know for a fact there was enough oil in the engine, so what else would make it nip up?

Whilst we are at it, does any one know what engines would drop straight into the CG? Noticed 2nd hand CG engines seem to be rather pricey Crying or Very sad

CG top ends dont seem too expensive on evilBay though. 150 cylinders and piston kits go for less than £80, might be worth looking down that avenue?

Just one of those things where I don't want to buy a part, find out its not that bit then buy the next bit and keep replacing bits.

More tempted to just replace the engine to get it OTR and then I can spend some time with the old engine on the bench to figure out what happened.

well since it's not seized, i'd say just a piston and rings would do, but you can't be sure till you have a look at the barrel.

So I know without whipping the top off its hard to say but, what is actually happening inside the engine when its making that racket?

Could be knackered bearings or blocked oil galleries causing metal on metal.

When my CBR blew, i bought a cheap second hand engine, stuck that in the bike then had the old engine out on a bench and took it apart to see what went wrong. If nothing else it taught me loads about how an engine works and how to take it apart and put it back together again without having to worry about messing it up.

Turned out my cam sprocket had sheared off, flat spotted a rocker arm, flat spotted the cam lobes and various other nasty top end bits.

TBH That is my plan if im honest. Buy a 2nd hand engine to drop in the frame and then take apart the current one to learn about engines etc
