I passed me mod2 last week and just got myself a zx6r, whey, anyway...

I was hoping to find out what everyone thinks is the best way of deterring thieves and minimizing the chance of my bike being stolen.

I live on a one way street and cannot park my bike in the back garden (alley way is too narrow to get down) I can probably park the bike directly outside my house as everyone parks along the road so i can't really hide it anywhere.

Should I get a chain and chain it to one of the lamp posts? Are disk locks a good idea? If I parked it outside the house I could definitely hear someone moving a chain etc so could probably get up and chase them off.

Any thoughts etc, someone must be in a similar position..

Beware of pavement parking, tickets ahoy.

Anyway of installing a ground anchor? That would be best, coupled with a sold secure gold rated chain wrapped as tightly as possible so as to reduce leverage options.

I will be fine with parking on the road, the lamp posts are really close to the curb as the path is very narrow.

A ground anchor would be good but I don't think the council would like me digging a hole in their road!

It really depends on your area tbh, busy london streets are different than the suburbs or rural areas, I could probably park my bike on the pavement forever without getting a ticket for instance. A chain long enough to get around the post and to your bike without it being on the pavement is a good idea if you live in a busy area (to avoid parking tickets). About 2m should do it.

Get a nice thick chain, an Almax 3 if you can afford it is a sound investment and if you can tehn try and have it attached to the frame of the bike rather than through a wheel (harder than it sounds on a sports bike).

Next, get an alarmed disc lock, doesn't need to be expensive as all it needs to do is wake you up if someone is messing with it. Best thing about alarmed locks IMO is that it is impossible to accidentally ride off with it still attached and will wake you up if anyone moves your bike.

One of the best pieces of security though is a cover. Out of sight out of mind kinda thing, make sure your chain can thread through holes in the cover though because some thieving pikeys will even nick that.

Essentially, if someone wants it enough they will have it. You just need to make it more hassle to nick than someone else's bike.

Okay, cool looks like i have a little shopping list then!

The almax looks a bit out of my budget, I have found some beefy looking chains on eBay so I might get one of those. The space is right outside my house so someone trying to get through a big chain i'm likely to hear them.

What are the xena alarmed disk locks like? Have found one of those going cheap.

Will grab a cover tonight!
